The Numbers Game

It’s pretty hard to believe that a deficit could be literally twice what you estimated in the space of a few months, but Wab’s got one thing one his side: average John Q. Manitoba voter probably couldn’t care less. They just want the free stuff to keep coming.

The Manitoba government’s deficit for the current fiscal year is expected to reach $1.6 billion, more than double the $794 million estimated in the spring budget, the province’s second-quarter report released Monday showed.

  1. I’ve always suspected Manitobans were among the more retarded Kanuckleheads.

    1. The article did mention the bulk of the deficit came from the worst wild fire season in 30 years nothing anyone could have predicted. That said, Only the Progressives and Liberals in Winnipeg and the Native bands in Northern Manitoba are the Knuckleheads you refer to. The entire Southern portion of the province voted Conservative. So please don’t paint us all with the same brush. Thank you.

  2. So we’re probably be getting even more Manitoba Plates around here.

So, when you get $5 Billion from Alberta, Saskatchewan and BC (soon to be only the first two) where is there any incentive to do a single damn thing to make your province a place where someone wants to live, work or invest. Just keep digging because hey, the suckers further west can pay for it.

  3. But we’re reassured that the folks in Florida are all hurtin’ cause of snowbird boycotts, right? That’ll show us Yanks..

    (pause)

Between the CDN economy and the exchange rate, just how many Canadians are able to afford a winter trip to Florida?

    1. In northern Africa, cdn peso goes a bit further but gasoline is 2x more, it’s offseason, everyone watches soccer at the cafe, snow piling up in the mountains, watch for mudflats.
      It’s a Kingdom.
      Seasons Greetings!?

  4. Manitoba Gov’t budget was expected to have $25.8 Billion in expenditures in spring of 2025
In autumn of 2025 the equalization was increased 7% to $5 Billion, very close to what the maritime basketcases receive at 20% of expenditures
Now that the NDP appear to have added $800 Million to the deficit, I suppose in a weird sort of way the equalization percentage is also falling…
So, “good on the NDP” and though they’re promising that 2027 will be different, there’s NO REASON to believe that the NDP are being truthful . During 2024 from the initial budget to the final budget, the NDP deficit rose by $500 Million through the year. As they say in certain economist’s circles, “this time is different” lol…

just under 20% … but probably falling in light of an increased monster deficit

AB separation referendum in autumn of 2026. Best to plant a “victory garden” so they don’t starve to death hoping for an additional bailout from the Department of Brookfield in Ottawa, tier 2 Canada.

  5. I just don’t get it. The budget isn’t balancing itself and yet he’s such a nice guy.
