Could’ve had a pipeline, but this is Canada after all.
As Nova Scotians complained about high electricity costs in February, we were burning natural gas from the other side of the world.
The Greek-flagged liquified natural gas tanker Maran Gas Hector arrived in Saint John, N.B., at the end of February after a 25,000-kilometre journey from Australia.

Both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have banned fracking despite the fact that are immense amounts of natural gas in the shale.
Quebec has over 200 million barrels of oil in the Gulf of St Lawrence that would require no pipeline.
Maybe after Alberta leaves and the eastern provinces no longer have equalization payments they will come to their senses, but I won’t hold my breath.
See, that’s why equalization is a farce. The strategy is to leave their resources in the ground and wrap yourself in green camouflage while living off the efforts of other provinces that do develop their resources and while doing so, cast aspersions on those province for not being in the green church. AND then also having far more influence in Parliament than their population should have.
For example, if Alberta had the same ratio of seats to population that PEI has, it would have 110 seats in Parliament, not 37. And if Alberta had the same ratio of seats to population that equalization sucking Atlantic Canada has, it would have 60 seats, not 37. The Liberal “majority” is false and frankly, I’m sick of it.
l looked it up already.
iirc 8 out of 9 NS MPs are LIBERAL.
lets see if my recollection is correct . . . . . .
nope. is even WORSE. 11 MPs total, e-v-e-r-y o-n-e of them LIBERAL.
https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en/search?province=NS
soooooooooo NS ufts about heating costs, YOU’RE the ones VOTED for the party of PM ‘no business case’
https://nationalpost.com/opinion/trudeau-has-ensured-there-is-no-business-case-for-oil-and-gas
why does SDA keep whining on this topic ie *consequences* instead of whining about the root CAUSE???
And if Alberta had the same ratio of seats to population that NS has, Alberta would have 51 seats in Parliament….not 37.
Does anyone get it yet about Irving Oil being the reason we don’t have another pipeline from the West to Ontario and Quebec?
Irving and their fricking oil refinery in Nova Scotia is THE REASON. Because it is set up for Saudi crude, and cannot process heavy Western crude economically. It is more profitable for them to use the Federal Government to crush growth in the West (and in Ontario, and Quebec, and everywhere else) than it would be to re-tool that refinery.
And -that- is why the #Lieberals are anti-growth Net-Zero swamp rats. Because Uncle Irving said so.
It’s also why there is not a major refinery in Alberta, shipping finished product instead of heavy crude. Because the big players in Ontario, Quebec and Irving don’t want the competition.
If Alberta was smart, they’d put in nuclear plants for electricity, use it to cheaply process the Tar Sands oil, and incidentally run Calgary and Edmonton at a penny per kilowatt hour. That would be smart. What are they doing instead? Windmills.
If Ontario was smart, we’d have a nuclear plant at Nanticoke where the coal-fired station was, we’d add more to Darlington and Pickering, and drive the price of electricity down, down, down. Manufacturing companies would flock here for the cheap electricity. That would be smart. What are we doing? Windmills.
Whenever you see something so stupid that you can’t believe it, so idiotic that it can’t exist, you follow the money and the buddy-buddy connections allll the way back to Saudi Arabia and the Irving Oil company.
#TheDonald pulled the sheets off this arrangement when he Maduroed Iran. Now Irving is standing there with no pants, red faced and helpless to do anything about it. #Donald is looking smarter and smarter to me every single day. This is genius.
Even better, with his 51st State thing he managed to get #CarkMarney elected. Accident or deliberate, that means the #Lieberals are in power now, taking the results of their efforts since the 1970s right on the fricking chin. With a Louisville Slugger. KaPOW baby!
TP, got a ball park figure for cost of a refinery?
Depends what’s being “refined”.
Imperial spent maybe $50B on Kearl Lake oilsand project. It should last 50 years.
As Chretien would say “what’s a few brazillions”? Or was that George Bush? Lol.
It’s only OPM’s.
“TP, got a ball park figure for cost of a refinery?”
Cheaper than a $90B train from Toronto to Montreal.
I’m going to wildly guess that it would be -way- cheaper. And nuke plants are cheaper than $90B too.
Particularly if the steel, the pipe and all the other goodies were made in Canada and used to boost the Canadian economy instead of the Chinese economy, or the Indian economy. Less welfare payments because more jobs type of thing, right?
Bonus, you can use the new steel-making capacity to make gun tubes for your moribund Canadian army and navy. Maybe a nice nuclear plant to make aluminum for your tiny little busted airforce. Heavens forbid anybody might build a Megaforge like the one in the USA to punch out titanium structural components for aircraft, cars, military vehicles etc.
Megaforge, cheaper than $90B. Just sayin’.
That’s why American military aircraft outperform everyone else’s, by the way. Very large forgings of steel, aluminum and titanium. Larger than anyone else can make, because nobody else has a forge big enough and heavy enough to do it. We could make one. But we don’t. And isn’t that an interesting thing?
Also cheaper than the 93 billion Catherine McKenna pi$$ed away.
The cost of a refinery would be financed by the private sector while the $90B train from Toronto to Montreal plus the inevitable cost overruns and slush funds would be paid by taxpayer extortion.
When the mindset of “the government should do something” replaced the “Can do” confidence it made us all poorer.
I don’t think it’s the cost. It’s the permitting and protesting.
Absolutely….just ask Shell
“It’s the permitting and protesting.”
Yes. The government will not issue permits, because of the protesters who are funded by… wait for it… the government. An amazing circularity, is it not?
In related news, Alberta separation referendum in court this week because of the Cree Nation. You can’t separate from Canada because you didn’t ask the Cree real nice. Another amazing circularity.
Funny thing is, the treaties were not with Canada, but the Crown of Britain.
And nobody so much as asked the Albertans. Perhaps it’s time they got a say?
Phantom is very correct. Admittedly, a refinery would be expensive, but if it had been planned for not that expensive and the cost to benefit ratio would have likely balanced eventually (but I think only if you had increased pipeline would it be a huge money maker, and that would have been expensive, and need good planning).
I say this in a past tense because your government coffers are being frittered away on other projects; it’s a little late in the game to consider refineries or pipelines most likely.
And, as our Secretary of State has said: it was a choice.
“Admittedly, a refinery would be expensive…”
Yes it would, but as you say it would have a profit to it. The train is guaranteed to lose money forever, it cannot possibly break even no matter how many people ride it.
One thing makes the country grow and prosper, the other thing is a luxury that returns nothing and eats everyone’s income. Guess which one they want to do.
Ontario is adding more at Pickering. They are refurbishing 4 reactors that were to be shut down permanently. They are expanding at Darlington. There are 4 SMRs about half way through construction, and another 4 large sized reactors are being built at Wesleyville, about 45 minutes east of Darlington.
I did not know that. Very interesting indeed. Perhaps elections do have consequences after all.
Funny how they don’t tell anybody about this. Or maybe I just live under a rock… ~:D
Ontario is blowing millions on endless advertising, the nuke ad particularly annoying.
“…the nuke ad particularly annoying.”
It seems my efforts to unplug from the big propaganda machine have been more successful than I thought. I have not seen the nuke ad at all.
Awesome. ~:D
A 25,000 k journey of a shipment of gas on an ocean-going sailing ship, eh?
Burning oh-so-clean bunker fuel, no less…
‘Save The Planit’ by buying your tomatoes locally but get your natural gas from halfway around the world because you’re too brainwashed to frac and produce the local gas.
Same with steel, buy your food locally but get your steel from Asia.
What happened to all those government initiatives like the ‘1OO Mile Diet’ and other green buy local plans?
Ah Stan. You had to bring up tomatoes. A few years ago a supplier of tomatoes near Windsor, Ontario was caught importing tomatoes and re-packing them in boxes that read “Grown in Ontario” to avoid taxes. Another farmer who was promoting the 100 Mile Diet and grow local idea was caught growing Poinsettias in the off-season and shipping them worldwide. When found out he said “farming’s a tough business”.
Locally, many hothouse tomato farmers switched to weed in 2018. Wave of the future, y’know.
These days, many weed farmers are switching to tomatoes, lettuce, etc. Because you can’t make an honest buck growing weed in Ontario. Illegally, yes. Inspected and certified? No.
So just keep that in mind when you go to your local weed store and they have no-name weed “real cheap.” Toxic mold is a thing that you do not want to be smoking.

“We’ll be our own best customer” . Weeell, maybe not.
Canada: old Micmac word meaning “ridiculous sheep people”.
I’m old enough to remember Indians were never part of our culture. They were mysterious to us until FILTHY LIBERALS figured out to use them as our battered child.
I’ve worked in Nukes for 28 yrs all over Ontario, NB and Korea. All of them are corrupt leftist run toxic organizations that spend millions telling you they are not a toxic organization.
You Salute the Gaysex Flag as you cross into your workplace on a Gaysex Sidewalk. Then some union loser hands you an Orange with some feathers on it so you now have a rag to wipe your oily hands off when you change your oil.
DEI clubs, it’s unreal the Cultural Marxism pushed.
It takes decades for a new refinery to not turn a profit;
the last new large US refinery was 1977’s Marathon’s Garyville.
Want to become a millionaire? start with a billion and build an airline.
Want to own an oil refinery? no one else does.
