Impressed you like Sly … his music was in a uniquely distinct lane that I’d call psychedelic Funk. Being a Bay Area native … Sly was influenced by the 60’s SF psychedelic vibe … along with Soul and Funk … and Black Gospel.
I used to be considered odd because I regarded Sly and the Family Stone as the second greatest San Francisco band, behind the Grateful Dead but ahead of everybody else. And not because they’re really from Oakland; from this distance everything from LA to Portland looks like San Francisco. But because their sound is so distinctive, they don’t seem to belong to that scene and yet they sure did.
