Tristan Hopper, National Post (paywalled);
The Liberals’ plan to “buy back” thousands of once-legal firearms has experienced so many cost overruns that it has so far more than $24,000 for every gun collected.
This means that for just three firearms turned over as part of the program, the federal government could have instead paid the starting salary of a full-time RCMP officer ($71,191).
For every two guns, the government could have purchased a new fully-equipped patrol car.[…]
As of the latest count from Public Safety Canada, “more than 32,000” firearms have been collected in the first six weeks of the program. But this is against the $779.8 million in costs that the program has incurred to date.
This works out to roughly $24,370 per firearm, most of which is sunk administrative costs that the original owner will never see.

Still can hardly believe nearly 32,000 firearms have been willingly turned over to a parasitic entity which could pummel you or extinguish your life, because:”just following orders” has become their moto.
Well, about 22 000 were given up in the first week but the government has redacted/censored the information regarding who turned in those firearms. Who actually turned in those firearms ranges from retailers who had them in stock to firearms confiscated by the police. It could of course be actual private owners but then why completely redact the information on the freedom of information request.
I think it will eventually be revealed that most/all of those “22,000 guns” allegedly turned in were from places like Cabellas and other large retailers, who have been stuck with millions of dollars worth of dead inventory they weren’t allowed to sell and couldn’t ship to the USA because Canadian gun laws.
Recall also that there is a CAP on how much money is available to buy things back, so retailers would be jumping on that as hard as they can . For which I do not blame them one tiny bit, when you are a retailer you are 100% at the mercy of the regulatory establishment. The item costs you $3,000-$5,000 and you’re sitting on 10 of them? That’s a huge problem.
If the cops also padded those numbers I would not be even faintly surprised, just another Soviet trick in Soviet Kanuckistan. In fact I would need to see a stack of 22,000 guns with an inventory of where they came from before I would believe a single word of it.
They started this farce in Nova Scotia and pulled in 25 guns. Some of which I’m sure were actual, functional, working firearms and not some chunk of rust hauled out of Grandad’s boat house. I saw the Big Display they put on for the media, I did not notice any Dreaded Assault Weapons of murder/death/kill!!! among them.
Bottom line, this thing is an excuse to spend $779.8 million on gifts for your friends, and giving big retailers some relief so they’ll slide you a couple party donations. Small retailers and regular peasants get NOTHING, and that is by design.
It’s good to be a #Lieberal, right? Elbows up!
Carney just forked over $2Billion to a country most can’t point to on a map. There is nothing in this world that’s cost prohibitive.
“32,000 firearms”? I call bullshit.
32K is bullshit. They would make a video of a bulldozer running over guns like all those gun grabbing programs do. Gun owners got an email by the RCMP pointing out compensation is only available until the money runs out. You know, give us your guns NOW or you might not get any compensation. That is also bullshit. I mean the concept, not the promise. Most people won’t get a penny. Typical Liberal program. Throw taxpayer money around on an ineffective project to make a show for election purpose. Non-gun owners don’t care, until they realize the precedent of gubmint confiscating private property on an ideological basis is now set. Since we are living in a climate emergency, do you really need that German SUV that can go 240 kmh? That F-150?
And how would the po-po know my email address unless I possessed a restricted weapon?
I got one , and I just have a PAL .
If their paying you 2300.00 for a Norico knock off M14 that you could have bought new in the what 2010 or so for 700.00 bucks . No wonder, they’re going broke the bribes seem to be huge.
Allan Rock was sure talking out his a– back in the day. But everyone should have knew that.
Are they paying 2300 for that Norinco? Heck you could almost buy a decent Garant for that kind of dough…
I was off a bit , and according to Gemini the Garand never made the list.
Model / Variant Compensation Amount
M14 Rifle (Standard/Norinco/Polytech) $2,612
M1 Carbine (Prohibited variants) ~$600 – $900 (varies by manufacturer)
Ruger Mini-14 (Often confused for M1 style) $1,407
Ljungman AG42 $440 (Business rate; Individual TBD)
Replying to Mugs: The Garant didn’t make the list: That’s what I mean. If a person were to trade in these scaaaaary prohibited guns, that person could use the money to buy a perfectly legal non-scary semi auto 30-06 (or 308) with an 8 round clip. Just sayin.
Yeah, I’m also think they have your address from PAL renewals. I originally had a possession only license (POL) that was automatically switched to a possession and acquisition licence (PAL) when the POL was discontinued. I’ve never registered or owned any firearm, restricted or non-restricted, in my name. I have been getting the emails to declare any restricted rifles so must be all people with a PAL.
Your email address is one of the requirements when you apply for your PAL.
uhuh. the big one going on now is HOW ABOUT THE LAND UNDER YOUR HOME?
IT COULD BE UP FOR GRABS. BETTER FIND OUT IF THERE WERE EVER ANY ‘FIRST’ NATIONS FOLKS.
NO RECORDS OF COURSE WITH AN ORAL TRADITION
Imagine the arrogance.. the entitled ‘presumption’.. Imagine allowing your feckless, corrupt government to bribe you into giving up what should be your G*d-given right to hunt and defend yourself.. with *your own* money.. I would mock our poor Canadian cousins for allowing this to come to pass, but it happens in U.S. blue states as well.. all. the. time..
These authoritarian fools need to be shouted down.. mocked, derided, and ridiculed.. humiliated for even having the audacity of showing their faces again, let alone ever speaking in public again. It works for the left, rather well actually.. it is past time to feed them some of their own medicine.. Or, better yet, leave the eastern provinces to drown in their corrupt ‘socialist’ cesspool, and join us.. Have actual guaranteed rights for a change..
I don’t buy it either, my wild-ass guess is that they lumped in firearms taken via criminal seizures to pad the numbers.
a MOST grand example of the c-o-n-s-e-q-u-e-n-c-e-s of voting Liberal. tada!!!
dont fergit SDA this is what CanaDUH wants and demands and selects on election day.
(whats all that whining grumbling cacaphony in the background? pffft. its only money!)
Only Fools Destroy Tools.
32K firearms which, if not imaginary, could have been airlifted to the Iranian people.
On February 16, 1995, while defending the proposed universal firearms registration system, Allan Rock said:
”Let us not hear that the registration system… is a prelude to the confiscation by the government of hunting rifles and shotguns. That is the way to distort the discussion.”
It definitely was always about people control not gun control.
I have a PAL and have received 2 emails, first one making me aware of the program and the second one, what I would call an intimidation follow up. This is just a govt. website/portal asking you to voluntarily register with them for a possible (but unlikely) chance to get some money down the road, in return for your firearms.
My understanding is, that there have been no guns physically confiscated. The amnesty period is the end of Oct. Like Tracy Wilson of the CCFR says, there is a lot that can happen between now and then.

Meanwhile… I’m specifying a clean build on a stripped lower to accommodate a suppressor.
Might just go Palmetto State Armory– build fast and get shooting.
32 000 has that certain ring to it.
A number pulled out of the void.
Government lies.
On the long-gun front they always lie with statistics.
Harken back to the original Gun Registry, where the RCMP boasted of “Registering nearly 2 million firearms”.
A great government success.
Except the best estimates, prior to Allen Rock’s idiocy..had been 21 million long guns in private hands.
Only government could boast of such a success, where 19 million firearms had gone black, as far as government records go.
The “Symbol minded” to quote George Carlin.
Making possession of the tool into a criminal act, does nothing for trust in government.
To wake up one morning and realize that I am become a criminal..
And my crime is that of not informing a group of fools, thieves and bandits,of the fact I possess certain tools.
Thanks to Allen Rock, his obvious duplicity and criminal malice..Canadians took action.
Never before in the history of Can Ahh Duh, have so many citizens had caches of tool and its feedstock..
Such massive noncompliance should be a warning to the politicos..
But they are too power hungry and greedy to see.
“Harken back to the original Gun Registry…”
Ah yes, the good old days, when the government would NEVER confiscate your property. I remember it well.
I participated vigorously in the “debate” and posted all over the place that there were -at least- 20 million long guns in Canada based on sales figures alone. Because I still believed a reasoned argument was possible.
I believed that for a long time. Right up until Covid, honestly. But now I don’t think that anymore. That’s why I generally don’t bother to comment on guns these days, today is an exception. There’s no point in even saying anything, they’ve gone full retard and won’t stop until they’re deposed.
Chinese influence I expect. Chicoms don’t like it if their victims can shoot back. It’s messy.
It’s all part of the government’s action for the seemingly apparent planned tyranny backlash, preemptively disarming of people who might resist the completion of the return to serfdom. If even 3% of Canadians stood up to the state, it could collapse as that represents almost 20 times the numbers in the entire Canadian military (assuming the ranks would obey orders to fire on their own parents and countrymen). The elected Jacobins and Bolsheviks are terrified of gun owners and the notion of people in mass potentially refusing to file and pay taxes. Today’s Canadians are far too ovine for that to happen of course unless or until things get real bad.
Perhaps this explains the notion of replacing Canadians in the Canadian military with foreigners who would not feel conflicted with firing on Canadians.
Diagolon.
For some reason,Liberal MPs and their Cabinet ministers and flunkies, fastened on to Jeremy’s Joke and appeared terrified of or pretended to be terrified of this “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy”..
Now there is no reasoning with our progressive comrades, but What they accuse,is usually a window into their empty wee minds.
What about “Diagolon” parallels Liberal Plans?
Why did they fall for that meme?
I mean, they actually cited Diagolon as a justification for their illegal declaration of “A State of Emergency”
For the concept contains some truth,a new and more perfect union of the self reliant and tool user regions, would frighten the takers and help isolate the parasitic overload.
