6. Artemus Ward was worth reading in dialect. Dozens of other Victorians wrote in dialect. Few if any of them are still considered worth reading. Editors eventually started telling writers: You are not Artemus Ward, nor meant to be.

   Joel Chandler Harris was considered worth reading…briefly, until Black Americans started getting their own storybooks published. After that not even Disney could save Harris’s books from oblivion.
