The Golden Opportunity that Canada Missed

Americans from coast to coast are celebrating the dual gold medal Olympic hockey wins. But beyond that, as Batya Ungar-Sargon accurately writes, “It’s the vibe shift we needed. Patriotism is back, baby! It’s hot! It’s cool again! And it is in da club.”

Thought experiment: If Canada had won even one of the two gold medals, would Canadians from coast to coast have seized the opportunity and celebrated some well deserved national pride? Imagine if this now legendary photo was of Connor McDavid, wrapped in a Canadian flag.  Would the cultural gatekeepers have “permitted” Canadians to feel good about their country for once, or would that be deemed uncouth by the legion of Karens in Canada’s urban centres?

  1. There can never be true happiness in a land stuffed full of little Banty roosters strutting around with their little wings up, all the while screeching “Trump, Trump, Trump”.

  2. “…would Canadians from coast to coast seized the opportunity and celebrated some well deserved patriotism?”

No. A healthy percentage of the population is talking about leaving, and their reasons are good ones.

  3. There were quite a few Canadian businesses looking forward to making a mint off Karens happy that their shitty little country had got the best of Orange Man Bad.

So yes, you’d have heard about nothing else for weeks.

  4. Disappointment is palpable all around.
I was promised, if Canada lost, the great orange satan would make us the 51st state.

  5. “Patriotism”? What’s that??? We actually canceled Canada Day because a Trust fund, nepo baby with adorable socks said so.
There’s far too much to cover on the topic of “What’s Wrong With Canada.”
Someday someone will write a treatise on the topic.

Just on sports alone. Americans do flyovers in college games. Ever hear 50,000 kids sing John Denver’s “Country Road” after a West Virginia Tech game? What are we going to sing… “Snowbird” by Ann Murray?
Ever hear a Cdn tell you that three downs in Cdn football is far superior than four downs in the U.S.?? No it’s not…what total horseshit!!!! If punting the ball is your jam, Canada is where it’s at.
Hockey? We were told early in life that Canada produced the best hockey players in the world bar none. End of discussion. Sadly, we believed it.
The ’72 Canada/Soviet Summit Series proved it was all a lie. You could almost feel the panic set in when they booed Canadian players as they left the ice in Vancouver.
And Cdn patriotism is directly dependent on the opposing team. If it’s a country other than the U.S. we’re all instructed to “Tone it down and be polite, we don’t want to be like the gauche flag-waving Americans, besides, we’re the cool, laid-back hippies of the global community.”
    If it’s the U.S.? “We’re number 1!!!!!!!” Yeahhhh…in your face Yankee dogs!!!”
We truly are a hot mess.
Tristin Hopper’s column yesterday pointed out how 25% of the Canadian workforce is employed by the government directly or indirectly, and it’s increasing every year.

    There’s your problem.

  6. That’s a bit rich considering that this site never promotes Canadian patriotism, but rather downplays the country at every turn. If Trump slaps massive tariffs on Canadian aluminum — a move destructive to both countries — the headlines read “Canada had it coming!” and “Canadians should quit whining!”

Would it make you feel better if we gave Carney, the holder of three citizenships and the Liberal Party a rousing patriotic tongue bath to start your morning? You know, part of a breakfast routine?

…a move destructive to both countries
      Says who? You?
When Trump says he’s going to build his own cars & parts and make his own steel…he ain’t fng around, unfortunately for Canadians we’ve been told and actually believed the U.S. needs Canada and that we hold all the cards.
      We don’t…it’s all a lie.

      1. Says who? You?

        Says just about every economist.

The deliverable price of aluminum in Pittsburgh is about 60% more than that of Toronto right now, and yes, that’s measured in the same currency. Can you imagine being a Pittsburgh manufacturer trying to compete in world markets with that kind of cost disadvantage? Can you imagine being an American consumer having to absorb those costs? The elevated cost of aluminum is adding about $1,500 per vehicle manufactured in the US. American GDP may be up, but manufacturing is down over the last year.

What is this thing of which you speak?
Care to give an example of “Canadian Patriotism”?.

For I would be real interested.
In the campaign for Western Independence ,I have yet to hear a “Canadian Patriot” make a case for continuing Confederated Canada’s existence.
      I am not leaving Canada.
      It died decades ago.

  7. I remember the 1972 Summit Series when the whole country stopped what they were doing to watch the eighth and final game, with Paul Henderson scoring the winning goal in the dying seconds of the game.

There’s an iconic photo of him celebrating the goal:

    https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com/1972-summit-series-hockeys-most-iconic-photo-turns-50/

Henderson was a hockey hero for a good many years:

An interesting factoid: Henderson scored the deciding goals in the last three games of the series.

    1. Hands down the most recognizable photo in all of Canada…right up there with the “Last Spike”. Ask anyone who it is and they’ll tell you it’s Paul Henderson ’72 series against the Russians. Biggest clutch goal since god knows when.
Is Paul Henderson in the Hockey Hall of Fame? No, no he’s not. Is Dino Ciccarelli? Yes he is.
      How does that work?
Criteria for the HOF: candidate’s playing ability, character, contributions to their team and the game of hockey, and for builders,…
If like Dino, Paul had a couple charges of indecent exposure under his belt this would be a non issue.

      1. I should have added that Canada was a very viable nation back then even though Trudeau senior had already begun his ruination of the country.

  8. A crushingly large, overpaid and overbearing government was exactly the Biden administration program for US prosperity. That and 9% inflation. Trump has made hundreds of thousands of government employees/overseers redundant and the sane citizens are celebrating.

  9. It would have been framed exclusively about “beating the USA” and that kind of nonsense. National pride to the extent it craps on the USA only. A final against Finland or the Czechs would not have mattered. The CBC focus would still be the women’s team, women’s hockey, women’s bobsled, women’s curling, etc.

  10. The Left revealing their hatred of the Western World, and America specifically.

    Trump’s locker room joke may become the their last stand;
“how can you laugh at anyone’s expense?” is Fake Morality by people who no longer see humor,
whether sarcastic or not, as a cultural institution
but solely as an ad hominem attack vehicle for political enemies.

    BTW: don’t feel sorry for all those dopey white men in movies/sit-coms/commercials;
those guys really are that stupid.
