“Did the $6.6 million she and another American-born athlete earned from the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau last year — an amount that was accidentally disclosed on a fiscal report before it was scrubbed from the Internet, according to the Wall Street Journal — come with unsavory strings attached?”

Wait…doesn’t that disqualify her from competition? I thought it was only open to ‘amateur’ athletes ie: those who have never been paid for their contributions to sport?

      (team sports notwithstanding)

  2. I can’t believe there’s anyone on the planet who’s naive enough to think any athletes work for or represent anyone but themselves.

    1. You apparently missed Jack Hughes post game interview where he said he was proud to be American. He has a $64 million NHL contract. He didn’t play for himself or for money. He’s already well established as a player and whatever money he might have received is taxi money.

Similarly, I don’t think Sidney Crosby was on the Canadian team for personal notoriety or money. Then again if that’s how Canadian athletes really are, then losing both games is no mystery, but Ithink you are dead wrong.

I am assuming you are NOT a world class athlete yourself like the mother of my (3) children who won a gold medal at the 1976 games in Montreal and was very proud to be part of the TEAM that won. There was no money involved just a lot hard work and sacrifice.

  3. Correction, Eileen, your 8 year old self would think you are a belligerent narcissist. With all of the gifts you’ve been given, it’s such a pity that humility is not one of them.

  4. Shrug. In other words she’s pretty typical of an expanding segment of the western world. She’d recognize Joostaihn as a kindred spirit.

  5. She’ll fit in well with some of the other female Olympians that just luuuuv themselves. And should have sat out these Olympics.
