There were lots of great comments to this post yesterday, but this one from ‘The Phantom’ really stood out:

If you mention any of those four things to most Canadians living in urban areas, they will look at you like you’re insane.
Fire? They don’t even NOTICE. They’ve never f-ing noticed, and I’ve been seeing this sh1t since I was maybe 25? 26? And everybody denies it all day long, every f-ing day.
You can’t get ahead in Canada. Not since 1979. I got ahead by moving to AMERICA, making a bunch of money, and then moving back -with money- to get me far enough up the ladder they couldn’t knock me off again.
Now of course not only you can’t get ahead, you can’t stay level. Slipping back, one handhold at a time. But they’re still denying it, every day. Elbows up, you know.
That’s why a hockey game matters to them but MAiD doesn’t make it to their radar. Or Covid, or payijng >50% taxes, or guys getting fined $750K for mentioning that there’s only XX and XY. Keeping up appearances, not stepping out of line, gotta fit in you know.
That’s why I live in the sticks and don’t talk to anybody. It’s better this way, my liver isn’t being destroyed one cell at a time by trying to fit in with idiots.

Yes. Hockey games, outrage at “51st State”, and of course “Trump, Trump, Trump”, are just the necessary constructs of cowards who lack the ethics and moral courage to even acknowledge the problems that they are entirely responsible for creating and tolerating.
The good news is that “Cowards die a thousand deaths”.

My theory is that the majority of Canadians exist in an extreme state of denial. That state of denial did not come from nowhere. It was deliberately cultivated by Canada’s political class and their media. Constantly slant the messaging to create the idea that Canada is the superior country compared to America (and the prairie provinces) and then make this the core identity for Canadians. Over time this superiority complex has created what you see today – the arrogant, obnoxious, snobby, holier than thou Canadian.
This is where denial set in. Anything that challenges the Canadian superiority complex must not be acknowledged – the collapse of the standard of living, the deterioration of health care, growing homelessness and food bank lineups, increasing crime, the growth of political corruption. A complete denial that these problems exist or that the Canadian citizen’s voting habits are the root cause.
A prime example of this denial is the reaction to the fact that most of Canada is poorer than Alabama. The reaction was to deny the significance of the GDP per capita metric, ignore the housing cost difference, talk about education levels and life expectancy, insult people from Alabama. No introspection at all. Canadians, politicians and the media went right into denial and their superiority complex by being obnoxious, arrogant and snobby.

Talk to 98% of Canadians and see how many MPs they know including their own. Ask if they know what a MLA and MP is.
What the budget is. The debt. The population.
Canada’s Education System is a beauty.
Add in the 100% dishonest Media and Institutions making Canadians misinformed, disinformed, malinformed, uniformed and proud of it.
Talk to an MP. You’ll see. There’s a reason why Trudeau’s babysitter has been running the place for over a decade.

It started after the UEL’s got told to hit the road when the Brit’s surrendered ending the American Revolution.
They were enabled by the ex-pat ex-French colonial administration that the British allowed to stay in Canada after 1760 (they could speak French and keep their civil code-and the bureaucracy that came with it as long as they swore loyalty to HRH George III – aka give them their cut).
The UEL’s were thoroughly convinced the new American republic would collapse into anarchy and then they would be begging them to come back and take charge. Adherence to this train of thought was embedded into all aspects of Upper and Lower Canada that to this day it’s very easy for Canada’s establishment to invoke the anti-American pathological lie to get the desired response.
Joseph : Yes, there are definitely historical roots to the anti-American attitude. Imo, the attitude has accelerated dramatically in my lifetime. Perhaps there’s a correlation between this acceleration and the economic and social decline in Canada…a coping mechanism.
Barca : it could be stupidity but it could also be a cult like adherence to an ideology that was cultivated over decades. It is very difficult to break generations of cult style programming.
The whole situation was interesting to watch in real time because 24 hours prior you had Canadians reacting (overall, badly) to the news that the second poorest state in the U.S., Alabama, now has a higher GDP per capita than Canada. Rather than ask the question “why is our country doing worse than the second poorest state in the U.S.” it was by and large a non-stop cope and shitting on the good state of Alabama whose only crime as I see it is getting out there and hustling to improve…with a lot of ‘elbows up for the big hockey game tomorrow, eh’ (and we saw how that turned out).
There’s a reason your PM likes to pose in a hockey jersey, and you (Canadians, in general, not specific!) should be looking at that and wondering to yourselves about why, and the implications (namely that the GDP thing affects more people’s lives) — you’ve got parents who are getting harassed after their children were murdered in a school shooting, you’ve got a truly frightening thing going on with that MAID program, but oh hey, live feed of a hockey game.
Maybe it will be a blessing in disguise, just like Chicago losing the Bears, but only if you make it so. I find it silly and sad that a sports ball(puck) contest is the potential catalyst for change but so be it.
By the way: go Mississippi! they are very near to closing the GDP gap with you and are doing a marvelous job of improving their education. They’re really where it’s at when it comes to educational reform, would love to move there just to be a part of that, alas fire ants. Can’t wait to see them forge ahead in the future.

Canadians don’t let go of stereotypes easily. Not just stereotypes about Americans in the southern USA. Stereotypes about people in Alberta and Saskatchewan are similarly fixed in amber.
Stupid Alberta cowboys and energy workers and poor Saskatchewan farmers who are technically backwards and need Ottawa to guide and control our economy. They ignore the technological breakthroughs in Alberta’s oilsands and refineries and other high tech research. They never acknowledge Saskatchewan’s technology that built the world’s first carbon capture coal unit, North America’s first environmentally friendly rare earth metal refinery, the synchrotron particular accelerator, GPS aided farming and precision chemical application, etc. Instead they cling to their stereotypes and use them as justifications for their bigotry. Alberta and Saskatchewan are viewed with the same condescension as Alabama.

It hasn’t been lost that the very provinces that keep Canada from completely falling apart are treated the worst by their own country.
In the U.S. there is a similar circumstance, but it’s not as critical at this point (and thus more capable of being turned around) because it’s spread out throughout the states. But Canada’s situation is what it is due to the concentration.

The vast majority were really good people: polite, well mannered, happy and helpful. Cared about the people around them, looked out for their families and team. This is on both sides of the border.
Met a few “ugly” Americans, but less than number of “asshole” Canadians in my travels. What seemed to be similar between these two groups was the majority of both came from Urban centers, medium to major cities.
While the USA is in the middle of a Conservative revival, Canada is sliding quickly into anti-progressive socialism. Since Trudeau I, and more drastically Trudeau II, Canada has been thumping a hollow chest about our great nation on the world stage. Politicians, NGO’s and favoured Industries have gone for the glory at world events and never looked back at Canada or Canadians (unless looking for more money). The world is a stage for these actors.
The stage is rotting out beneath them, but they are blind to the creaking and cracked boards with the substructure held togeather with duct tape and rusted nails.
Old Mother Hubbard had it easy, only the cupboard was bare. Most young Canadians can’t even get a cupboard of their own. Job data is dismal, future investment is a cocaine pipe dream of our leaders on all levels.
Too many Canadians are blind, or willfully self deluding.
All I can do is prepare for my grandson to have some kind of future, majority investments are not in Canada.

Those who work the poverty system.
Those who work the government grant systems.

If we have a good hard look at every industry in this country, that’s still around, it is heavily dependent on government, one or another, or subsidized, directly or indirectly.
It’s no wonder this country is in a hypnotic state. The money is getting more expensive and harder to get, and the government ratchets up the propaganda and temperature.
Yes, indeed, if you think these are hard times, just wait until the government’s money spigot has problems.

Despite all the obvious, in your face problems in this country, urban and eastern Canadians remain oblivious to the LIEberals culprits responsible.

Especially on display during the Olympics: adverts about little diverse Mary getting up at 0400h to go to hockey practice driven there by her mother, of course. And their stupid hockey cards. It was a fine franchise too long ago to remember. Now it’s a franchise owned by an overseas corporation being hollowed out for profit staffed by foreign workers that don’t hire Canadians. It’s garbage now and falling apart but they wrap themseves in the flag and hockey for one more quarter of profits. And the drive through is still full of those Canadians that think all is well and are oblivious that it’s now just a facade.
