We Don’t Need No Flaming Sparky Buses

Everything old is new again.

On the heels of a statewide mandate requiring all school bus purchases in New York State be electric by 2027, parents in the Lake Shore Central School District are speaking out, claiming some bus drivers are turning the heat down, or off completely, in an attempt to conserve battery life on their electric school buses.

WIVB News 4 has received several calls from concerned parents in the school district, which covers parts of Angola, Brant, and Derby, regarding their child’s bus trips to and from school, claiming they’re coming in freezing when they get home after getting off the bus.

The kids are coming home saying their bus is freezing cold and the parents are giving them hand warmers.

“The heaters on the bus run off the same electricity as the bus itself,” said Scott Ziobro, a former school board candidate and parent who has children who go to school in the district. “They were told that it drains the battery capacity of the bus itself.”

  1. The fact this might be a surprise to some people is mind boggling. Then you realize who they voted for, and how stupid that makes them.

  2. OMG! the 1925 version came with a stove!!!??? ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Mommmaaaaaaaaa … SAFETY FIRST!! More children died or were permanently disfigured by the HOT wood stove than from frostbite! Right?

Or did those children have higher IQ’s than the kids of today

    1. I grew up with wood heat. You only burned yourself once. I was 4 years old warming myself by a red hot stove. If a kid effed up, his mom could always make a new one.

        1. Oh the joys of an agrarian family on the plains. Yeah … the TV show “Little House on the Prairie” was short half a dozen siblings.

Hmmmm? I wonder where they went? mass unmarked graves?

        2. Ah, yes, back when ‘nuclear’ families cared for each other.
I heard that, back then, blood was thicker than water.
Stay tuned for more Ripley’s Believe it or not.

  3. I’d trust one of those any day in cold and blizzards rather than I would trust an electric school bus.

  4. Suck it up.
I used to ride an old yellow school bus in the 1960s in northern Ontario. It was always cold and clunky.
Sometimes I opted to walk uphill both ways to my school that was 5 miles away, using snowshoes.
Then my pal got a skidoo, and we were golden.

  5. There’s a reason Tesla is getting out of the sparky car business. Nobody in his right mind and spending his own money still wants one.

Sparky vehicles were contraptions only politicians with a bone to pick with oil companies (why? name your cliché) could ever love.

    1. The tax subsidies went to WEALTHY leftist buyers who actually make enough money and pay enough taxes to utilize a $7,500 tax credit.

Yet these are the same hypocrites lamenting every Republican tax Bill as “tax cuts for the rich”! Do these people even hear themselves talk?

  6. “They were told that it drains the battery capacity of the bus itself.”

Yes, because the bus runs on BATTERIES… seriously, how are people this stupid? They find out the heater runs off the same battery as the engine, and they’re surprised?

Although, it -is- New York, home of some of the stupidest people I’ve ever seen in my life…

    1. The internal combustion engine is never more than about 40% efficient. There is a lot of waste heat that goes out via the exhaust and the cooling system, and that cooling system is where the car/truck/bus gets its cabin heat. An electric vehicle has nearly no waste heat to speak of, so the air is heated by electric elements, and those elements are heated by the battery, and the range of the vehicle goes down.

Ordinary redneck people, particularly us old guys that know what’s inside a vehicle, know this, and we make noises about it on forums like this or in the comments section of online newspapers. But those ignorant politicians and bureaucrats are deaf, and brainwashed by the climate change hoax people, and buy these things.

    2. I assume the bus driver STILL has to run the windshield defogger … windshield wipers … and I would expect those busses are REQUIRED to have heated mirrors … and the bus driver must have some source of heat … so he isn’t driving with frost bitten fingers …

… but let the children suffer

  7. Used to drive school bus occasionally. One morning it was -40 outside with a diesel bus that would not make it up to operating temp. Yes it had a winter front done up. The kids asked if I could turn the heat up but no that was all it had. This particularly morning busses for other schools in the district were cancelled because it was below the too cold threshold. For this school, they used a weather station in a micro climate that frequently is slightly warmer than other stations in the area so it busses were still running. Could not imagine trying an electric bus under those conditions.
