The crisis began after the water treatment system failed, sending sewage into homes and contaminating the water. It also flooded the only health-care facility, requiring a temporary move to the community school. Residents are still without potable water, but bottled water has been brought into the community.

One of the Canadian reserves has had a boil water advisory for 30 years, the Neskantaga First Nation, and there are many others who have had this for years. I wish the water advisory was in the National Capital Region, for 30 years. It’d be a lot more amusing than this.
The federal gov’t is in charge of this file, they give money to the band, it isn’t “my fault” or any other commenter’s fault aside from not pointing out often enough that Canada’s form of governance of the First Nations, along with nearly EVERYTHING THE FEDERAL GOV”T TOUCHES is garbage, we get garbage results from all aspects of federalism, yet millions swear that this is a great country.

We have a house in a small community in coastal BC. We pay substantial regional district property tax and a substantial fee for our water treatment. We don’t sit around and wait for the feds to fix the system when there is a breakage. Can’t the “first nations” raise the funds for their water treatment from the residents like we do? Isn’t self reliance what a “nation” does?
Because the chief and band council have higher priorities for the tax dollars received. Like new 4X4s and 100” TVs.
I live in a northern community and we do not have water available. I have my own well, and have to filter and keep the water clean and potable. at my own expense. Where in any treaty signed in Saskatchewan does it say that we are responsible for providing at no cost to the user clean water? Every instance that I have seen water treatment plants installed on native sites, they last a few years and are unusable because of lack of maintenance. Why? Is no one responsible?
As this has happened before in other communities I ask a question and all I ever get is crickets. So for all you indians who like spending my white man’s federal tax money to the tune of 32 billion a year:
Where in the treaty that my people signed with your people does it stipulate that the white man is responsible to provide potable water to you people in perpetuity?

On March 31, 2023 they had $37 million in the bank. Despite having $37 million in the bank they owed $25 million in bank loans. They had $67 million in revenue, almost all from government, including $11 million from Ontario, and the morons couldn’t figure out how to operate a shitter like every hamlet and village in Alberta not on an Indian reserve. A key point that should be made is that this rez had, as of 31 March 2023, an accumulated surplus of $114,068,012.00.
That’s a lot of Chevy Silverados, paved driveway and big screen TVs.

There is absolutely no point in spending money on a water treatment facility if the locals are unwilling to be trained to manange it.
That may or may not be true in the current situation but why do we not hear of remote ‘white’ communities with boil water advisories?

But you cant sell it to the indians as its their liberal right to get it for free.
My target market is not natives. It’s people being played for mugs by natives. Show me the mugs and I’ll show you the water!
Send DART, have them bring their containers that contain water purification equipment.
Then spend a million from the budget of that tribe to build them a containerized water purification system, monitored by the company in Alberta that does it for a bunch of other tribes.

These First Nation communities are not viable. There are no community minded people to run things.
Check the details. How many people are staffed to run the water/sewer systems? What are their accreditations? Is their training current?
I have heard from Indians who say their reserve wanted numerous backup water/sewer operators because the actual water/sewer operator “may” not want to do their job. Sometimes the problem is lack of interest. Most times, the problem is the budgets were re-allocated to other community priorities and the operator was tired of putting out fires.
Look at the maintenance management plan for the water/sewer system. Odds are it is not being followed.
