  1. Just for clarification, the largest immigrant group in Iceland is Polish. This increased dramatically when Poland joined the EU in 2004. You can assume your own reasons for why that was a catalyst. I tend to think a lot of them weren’t exactly enthusiastic about living under an unelected government and were a little gun shy in that regard due to Poland’s past history. Most of the other immigrants are Lithuanian and Ukrainian. The Ukrainians increased dramatically in 2022, primarily due to the war in the Ukraine. And, the jobs sought by most of these immigrants isn’t necessarily the grunt work. A lot are fishermen, or work in the tourism, construction and healthcare industries. Also, in Iceland you gain access to the European Economic Area (EEA) without work permits.

    1. When Poland joined the EU wages in the country were low and jobs not as abundant compared to other Euro nations so many young people moved to where there were better paying jobs and more opportunities.

Joining the EU allowed that free movement for the Poles.

  2. So yeah, worldwide and deliberate. It’s not possible without a coordinated effort. Isolated nations and continents, Australia, New Zealand and Iceland of course all of the sudden settled on the exact same worldviews.

  3. It is my understanding that Iceland has a very generous welfare program. Besides the eastern Europeans, there is a sizable group of “immigrants” from Africa. Mind you, I only know this from the Icelandic series “Trapped”!
