  1. Why don’t the NDP invest their own money into rental housing?

They could invest public workers union pensions in housing. They’d make scads of money but still be able to have row rental rates.

    1. “Why don’t the NDP invest their own money into rental housing?”

Because it is easier and more fun to steal -your- money, Joe.

I believe spite to be the single largest motivating factor for Leftists. Never forget that they hate you.

Also, this is a pump-and-dump. They actively seek to destroy the equity people have in their homes, so that they can pick up these assets cheaply themselves, and then sit back as the prices go up again.

    2. Are you kidding? Here in bountiful BC 41% of MLAs own properties other than their primary residence.
Dippers are cashing in on rental properties who then cry about greedy landlords, as they charge market rents.
Same goes for federal MPs and likely elsewhere. But, it’s not a primary source of income like it is for others.
Government can be bad for landlords but picking bad tenants is the greater risk imho, as one in the business.

      1. “…but picking bad tenants is the greater risk imho…”

Yes, and let me guess who goes right to the front of the line when a “bad tenant” shows up in their property. Is the NDPee MLA going to get frigged around by the System? No they are not, because the System knows which side it’s bread is buttered on.

It’s the same at a hospital. If the head doctor’s sister shows up in ER, she does not wait for 6 hours. Because there are -consequences- for messing with her.

  2. Both economic theory and real-life experience have amply demonstrated that rent controls are a shit idea, in the long run causing more problems than they solve.

But they can get politicians elected and even get them in government.

  3. Having made being a small landlord a bureaucratic ,unprofitable mess, government now complains of the lack of rental units and of the very high price of rent…
Gee imagine if we had Property Rights..
Maybe if we removed the fools and bandits, renting a place to live, might become a private transaction…
Impossible to parody the Never Done Payers, however I am up for releasing them onto the drifting ice sheets..
    Hudson Bay,an unrealized resource..

  4. I didn’t see the part where she listed the top household expenses starting with government. Government cost more than rent/ mortgage, or food, or heat, or transportation. Maybe if she introduced a bill to limit tax increases/ budget increases say 1% below inflation she might have some credibility

  5. It seems the Dippers have much more in common with the Italian Fascist Party and the National Socialist German Workers Party than they care to admit.

  6. I’m mostly just impressed the NDP has finally found a tax they oppose. I’m not sure what “tax on construction” is being referred to, it must be some entirely different tax than the carbon taxes, income taxes, GST, and permit taxes the dippers love so much.

  7. Economist and Nobel Prize winner in Economic Sciences Gunnar Myrdal said, “Rent control has in certain Western countries constituted, maybe, the worst example of poor planning by governments lacking courage and vision.”

Swedish economist (and socialist) Assar Lindbeck asserted, “In many cases rent control appears to be the most efficient technique presently known to destroy a city—except for bombing.”

    1. “In many cases rent control appears to be the most efficient technique presently known to destroy a city—except for bombing.”

Arguably worse than bombing, at least when a building is destroyed you can build a new one. Under rent control, no one will ever build anything. Or even paint it. Ever seen NYC? Nothing’s been painted since the 1960s, is what it looks like.

  8. Rent controls lead to less investment in housing, causing a housing shortage, leading to upward pressure on rents. Landlords invest in more housing using their rental profits. Limit or remove the profits and housing is severely reduced.

  9. Ok, and what percentage of her portfolio is real estate, or perhaps she even owns her own rental units?

Usually when the leftiods spout off, it is deflection, they are accusing you of the very same thing they are guilty of..

  10. Beck claims:

“One of the people we’ve heard from is a senior with cancer who has had to give away her cats because she can’t afford to keep them while her rent keeps going up. She needs help, and so do so many like her.”

Doesn’t the senior have any family willing to help her out, if she really can’t afford to live independently?

    Answer: of course she doesn’t.

Even money says the old bag alienated or drove off anyone who might have been able or willing to take her in in her old age—never mind take in her stupid cats—thinking she’d be young, beautiful and “independent” forever. If there was ever a husband, he’s almost certainly long gone, never looking back, and no daughter or daughter-in-law (if any exist) will suffer the old bag unless there’s a payday attached to the job.

Now if the old bag had had it enough together to acquire a single-family home that could be sold sight unseen to a Chinese “investor” for a king’s ransom so daughter or DIL can finally pay off her own consumer debt and become an Affluent Western Female Liberal engaged in the preferred hobbies of AWFLs—talking feminist rot on Bluesky and cheating on their husbands with a string of other women or himbos with a mommy fetish—the old bag would be waited on hand and foot by the best home help the son or son-in-law could afford, because daughter or DIL has never paid for anything non-frivolous in her life. And probably would have more enjoyable things to do than to write to Carla Beck.

As it is, the old bag had her reward. And she’s taking up an apartment that could be used by someone who isn’t a useless mouth—which was probably all the old bag ever was.

    1. “…she’s taking up an apartment that could be used by someone who isn’t a useless mouth…”

And there it is, the truth sneaking out despite everything. You just let these morons talk, and talk, and talk, and sooner or later they’ll say what they really think.

“Useless eater” is a term invented by socialists, “Dick.” You a socialist there, big boi? Posting from Islamabad or Aleppo? Maybe Mumbai?

  11. L – If Mass migration largely of unskilled, semi-skilled workers, in a time too short to accommodate them with normal economic growth; something the political elite have sabotaged in a policy of de-industrialization. Then the only quick solution to rebalance housing, healthcare and education is remigration.

If it were not for government hiring policies and subsidizing recent third world immigrants being hired in the private sector. That would already be in progress via normal economic supply demand balance. The chances of that being restored are approaching zero.

Wexit or enjoy the decline. Self-government is a call to adventure is something the pioneers answered, shouldered the responsibility and sacrificed greatly to build. The prov. NDP offer themselves as the high priests to their deity of Power. Choose wisely!

  12. “April ChiefCalf is the NDP MLA for Saskatoon Westview and the opposition Shadow Minister for Housing”

Does she rent? is she a landlord? or has she had her housing provided by her tribe?
