  1. ” … a tanker truck ended up in the water, due to wintry road conditions.”

There you have it, folks: wintry road conditions are the culprit.

Tell you what. Start issuing drivers licences with “fair weather operation only” restrictions.

  2. Best not to take the dirt road in winter conditions…

I know that, and I’m not a commercial driver … and a fair weather Californian.

    1. Well … I expect the driver shat his pants … so he was conveniently in the East Asian toilet bowl.

  3. I’m very familiar with this bridge, it’s about 45 minutes away. About 30 years ago there was a bad accident involving a semi with deaths involved. Shortly thereafter, they reduced the posted speed from 100 to 80 km/h for about 1/4 mile before the bridge. The problem is the highway leading up to the bridge (both north and southbound) is not aligned parallel to it. You approach a curve just before the bridge threshold at about 45°. As the curve straightens, the bridge deck is only about 100 yds away, so someone trying to pull out of a skid will likely end up in the drink. This is also a secondary highway and a popular alternate route for truckers into Edmonton because you can bypass the weigh scales on highway 63 (the road to Ft. McMurray). The only real fix would be to cut down the grade on both sides of the bridge as it’s not steep per se, but you need to be diligent. Anyone new to this road and especially travelling at night, might be prone to locking up the brakes. Throw a moose or deer into the mix and it’s a smash up derby.

    1. I live in the area as well and that bridge is a difficult setup with many accidents. Most tanker and heavy haul work is done by white guys for obvious reasons fortunately.
