British Columbia proposed legislation to limit how much electricity will be available to artificial intelligence data centers, and moved to permanently ban new cryptocurrency mining projects.
The government of Canada’s third-most populous province will prioritize connections to its power grid for other purposes like mines and natural gas facilities because they provide more jobs and revenue for people in BC, the energy ministry said Monday.
“Other jurisdictions have been challenged to address electricity demands from emerging sectors and, in many cases, have placed significant rate increases on the backs of ratepayers,” the department said Monday.
This looks like a case of Blind Squirrel syndrome.
The Dippers may have got this right. AI “factories” are immense, power consuming behemoths. It’s been reviewed in other jurisdictions south of the border and the same challenge exists.
SMRs appear to be the solution for the vast increase in power consumption ”needs”. That’s if we as a society decide that AI must take us over.

I think that’s a Vancouver only bylaw, the CBC said the city is “asking” for registration but prohibiting the use of unregistered fireplaces seems well past “ask” … and of course this won’t apply to the new or newly recovered or pending further judicial action First Nations lands in the lower mainland.

Both BC and Ontario are pretty arrogant about their electricity capacity. Both think they could cut off power to the U.S. as a bargaining tactic. But both are reliant on return power through the grid and in fact, in Ontario in 2024, 25% of the power in the province came from the U.S.
They need a wake up call.
Only Thug Ford has verbally threatened power being cut off from the US, which, is a known “Act of WAR” in international affairs. As an aside, I encourage Ford to follow through, as we could look forward to the FO portion of the FAFO equation.
As for BC, this province is a net importer of electricity, 25% of its needs, despite the vast hydroelectric resources. As well, the Island, Lower Rainland and YVR are all highly dependent on US fuel imports, up to 50% of fuel usage is imported.
This explains why Drugstore Dave has been SILENT about threats to cutting off the US, leaving it to his token alcohol bans. He’s even shut up about fining US transport trucks.
Oh it was heavily floated that BC could so the same….the leftists always think they have leverage, but it is in their minds….and of course, Ontario gets oil from the U.S. through Line 5 and BC gets much of its refined products from Washington State. And now with the Indians trying to take over BC, maybe the Chiefs should get involved. BC is screwed.
I’m sure if BC cut down all their trees and replaced them with windmills and solar panels they’d have lots of power.
