Our family farm used to have mail delivery to the top of our lane but that was discontinued sometime in the early 1960s. After that, we picked up our mail in a small town. In 1970, that post office closed and we used a community mailbox which is still in service to this day. Miraculously, the sky didn’t fall.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers went on strike Thursday after the government announced door-to-door mail delivery would end for nearly all households within the next decade.
Canada Post said the strike will mean mail and parcels will not be processed or delivered for the duration of the strike and no new items will be accepted.
personally, this dovetails perfectly for me, just sold my place 4 blocks from crackhead alley, *wherever* l move to lm going to set up a Canada Post drop box because I dont want anyone to know where l am.

Canada Post, its employees and its union are expensive anachronisms clinging to their monopoly of first class mail, which they use to intimidate the public into approving their excessive demands, with their management and unions cost-benefit taffy pulling for decades, the courier industry easily able to replace them more efficiently.
Each time they go on strike they come back with less revenue and customers, throwing fuel on their funeral pyre.
If they have declining mail volume, perhaps reduce mail deliver to three times a week…

End the first class mail monopoly, hand over the keys and assets to the brothers and sisters pretending to be workers and welcome them to reality. They will be gone within 6 months after they borrow on their assets and carry on as usual. The banks will own their assets and the union will have been successful in eliminating their members jobs as is the inevitable long term case with all private sector unions. It is at least as redundant as the CBC. Just another buggy whip industry.
All those government UNIONISTAS had the option to work for UPS, FED EX, etc. but they chose the cushy, unsustainable, government job. Well … good luck in your next venture. And BTW … show a little hustle! I want my door dash meal delivered HOT!

The old rural post office that I grew up with had mail delivery twice a week and everyone was happy. Then we got mail box delivery that we didn’t want four times a week. Why not have delivery twice a week Mon/Thur, Tue/Fri, Wed/Sat. A slightly ambitious contractor can do 2 day delivery, a moderately ambitious contractor can do 4 day delivery and a go-getter can do 6 day delivery. If you want daily delivery rent a mailbox. As I requested no flyers, when I check my mail box once or twice a week, normally I have nothing.
Ok, just for clarification. Instead of one individual delivering mail to a specific neighborhood door to door, there will be a representative from each household and business traveling to a designated location (presumably the post office or some designation) to pick up mail. Is that correct?

How are all those new EV mail trucks coming along? Phew! Now nobody will notice that 50% are inoperable at any given time … since they’ll all be mothballed.

I’m old enough to remember when Jean Parrot was the President of the postal workers union in the eighties. Back then he fought against automation as if it was Custer’s last stand and with some degree of success too I might add. CP execs gas lit everyone with their mealy mouthed statements as if they hammered out some agreement beneficial to both sides when in reality, arbitration was called in and split the difference.
Workers stayed employed…union coffers remained full and tax payers got effed.
Same sh**, different day. And I don’t have to tell you which side the public took every single time because as you know, if MeeMaw Thelma’s Christmas card to li’l Timmy doesn’t arrive on time there’s going to be trouble.
I’ve had R.R.#1 mail as a kid in the 70s.
Community mailboxes in apartments, and in the neighbourhoods.
Never had delivery to the door.
Remember, the 2015 election of Turdough, this was a prime issue they ran on.

Hfx-B, Rurally in AB our mail delivery had been 3 days a week for 20+ years. First P O Boxes and then the community mail box site. Not much difference. Always by private contractors. We pick up our mail once a week on Wednesday, the day our local paper comes out. For the last month or so, no local paper in the box. That is because sorting at the post office is done by unionized workers. For some unknown reason the unionistas think depriving rural people of local news will make us sympathetic to their cause. Nor friggin likely.
We live in a remote rural community. The nearest stop for any courier or private delivery is 38km away. We depend heavily on Canada Post for Amazon, stuff from the USA, anything. So when Canada post went on strike all of us had to send things to relatives for pick up whenever. People get used to doing without. Canada Post is writing its own death warrant.
They’ll have Carney settle the strike in their favor … and then 75% of their workload will evaporate. Congrats on your “win”!
In a sane world, Canada Post would be second only to the CBC to be axed.

Private alternatives have long ago provided infinitely better service.

The government is too chicken to actually declare Canada Post bankrupt, so we will be put through several months of Kabuki where they go back and forth to not come to a deal.
I have some mail that one day a week would be sufficient, because the rest of the time, all it is is junk mail.
I do have a package stuck with them, because they couldn’t wait until Friday to go on strike, and they are still the cheapest when it comes to getting packages from the US for customs clearance.
No mail to be opened by Der Fuerher Liberal henchman Sean Fraser, thank gawd.
Talk about relief, phew.
