  12. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland have been rightly skewered for their 1984-like overreach on wilderness-recreation bans. Here in New Brunswick we have taken a middle-of-the-road approach…

    …in the sense that recreation on private property is still allowed and that exorbitant fines for rule breakers have not been put in place. My wife and I own a fishing cabin on the Miramichi but we are not affected. The above rules say the province “recommends” that we use caution when at our camps and cottages or to stay away. But my wife, ever the cautious one, has ordered me to help her go to shut the camp down today until the emergency is over.

    Not so cautious was Liberal New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt. She was up at Doaktown for a two-day official visit, over the New Brundick Day holiday weekend. When she was there she allowed the village, in central New Brunswick, to proceed with a fireworks display on Sunday evening. This took place despite a province-wide fire ban, making the locality in the only one in the province to have fireworks.
