Spiked- Cracks are surfacing in the EU’s cosy cartel
It is worth noting that the European Parliament is not really a democratic institution. It functions more as a Potemkin parliament – a stage-managed performance in which the dominant party blocs pretend to represent voters. Manfred Weber, leader of the EPP, the largest group in the parliament and von der Leyen’s chief backer, let the mask slip when he said last week: ‘We are the oldest group in [the European Parliament], we respect its political culture. The European Parliament is not Westminster.’ What he meant, in effect, was that he prefers a system governed by gentlemanly backroom deals, not by genuine adversarial debate, as practised in the UK House of Commons.
The “EU parliament” can best be described as the “politburo”. Or perhaps even the “Reichstag”. After all, communism and fascism are close cousins.
EU is an aristocratic power structure of Europe. They are scared to death of what they are seeing in the world and will do anything to destroy any challengers. Think Biden administration x100.
Manfred Weber is so out of date. Westminster isn’t Westminster anywhere it still is in operation. The PMO and PCO run everything, members show up and bark like seals when prompted. “American Style” what piffle. The Americn republic is the closest thing to functioning opposition politics on offer, and money has mostly corrupted that to a uniparty. Canada? 5 people discuss, 1 person decides. The courts? Do as they’re told. Super shithole.
I remember when Robert Bork was nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court. There was criticism of the way he dressed. It was written off as “American Bork-apparel politics”.
