Say what you will about the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and to be clear, we do not approve of mortgaging the future with more reckless federal spending. But credit where it is due this bill includes one of the smartest, most grounded policies we’ve seen from Washington in years.
It rewards people who want to work.
You all know that I am the true Trump whisperer and fanboi of the maestro POTUS … BUT …
We JUST saw an article here about how LIFEGUARDS in the city of LA “earn” as much as $550k per year … and one lifeguard earned $700k over 3 years BECAUSE of how much OVERTIME pay they “earned”. And I assure you it’s even WORSE in the PD’s and FD’s. It is here in N.CA where Oakland Police officers are routinely “earning” > $500k salaries based on all the overtime pay.
The Bill made a HUGE mistake by not means testing and limiting the elimination of overtime tax by a reasonable amount. The overtime pay tax holiday doesn’t sunset until you earn $300k in household income. That number is $150k for the Social Security tax bonus. That’s RIDICULOUS. The Bill was sold as helping poor waitresses … not helping obscenely overpaid government employees.
So … LA lifeguards who “earned” $700k over 3 years … just got a GIGANTIC raise $$$$$$ from the BIG BEAUTIFUL government employee money grab. Why? Why wasn’t this capped at a lower pay threshold? Like the Social Security (limited) bonus was?
This was a Uuuge mistake … and only serves to put higher pressure on EVERYONES tax rates.

No … that’s a GOVERNMENT employee UNION problem … but what would have been wrong by capping the overtime tax holiday at $150k? THAT … would have certified it as a boon to ONLY low and moderate income earners.
I don’t much like a tax holiday for households earning up to $300k\yr.

Yes. I envy government employees who work 25 years then retire at age 50 on a last raise spiked pension, then get rehired at an even higher wage at the government agency … because he’s “experienced” … and then he TRIPLES his annual wage on overtime pay … and now that overtime pay isn’t taxed.
You damn right I’m envious. But I’m mainly depressed … because a system like that is economically UNSUSTAINABLE. It means public services get severely cut back, or taxes for ALL get jacked up even higher … but most likely BOTH.
The Canadian Federal Malignant Government always pays Itself first, so STFU.
