There are just over 4,200 dairy operations in Quebec out of 9,400 nationally. The objectives of supply management focus on protecting these 4,200 operations at the cost of the other 190,000 Canadian farmers, as well as Canada’s 40 million citizens.
I despise the protectionism of Canadian dairy products, and I would be glad to see them go.
Having said that, the US has historically been even worse in implementing protective tariffs. Duties against Canadian lumber and steel in particular come to mind.

That’s the allegation, but there’s no good evidence of it. It’s a theory that American steel producers push so that they get protection from foreign competition, very much like Canadian dairy producers.
In 2023, China exported 660,000 tonnes of steel to Canada. Even in the highly improbable case that all of it was then shipped to the US as “Canadian” steel, that would only represent 10% of Canadian steel exports to the US. That puts an upper limit to potential amount of Chinese steel transshipments. In practice, it’s likely far less than 10% of Canadian exports to the US, possibly even miniscule.

What, you need a peer-reviewed paper? I have a buddy who works in the oil industry in Calgary. He’s a buyer for an equipment manufacturing company & runs into Chinese steel being passed off as Canadian steel all the time.
It doesn’t matter. Canada has no leverage in this fight. Whining about Trump is pointless bravado; we have no choice but to accede to his demands because we need the US, and they don’t need us. And Trump is no longer playing along with the pantomime that Canada is some kind of partner in this relationship.

I’m a huge Trump fan and he’s killing it in 98% of everything he’s doing.
Part of the 2% that’s wrong is the con job he’s pushing on our dairy tariffs. The US hasn’t hit the export limits where the tariffs apply, and these were negotiated with Trump in his first term. So he’s being a bit ingenious or digging at himself when he’s railing at these.
And this is from someone that doesn’t give two sh1ts for Quebec dairy farmers and is much more concerned at Alberta leaving this country than quebec.
But this BS about Canada and the US tariffs is just that: BS for the general populace who haven’t bothered to suss out the real story.

Indeed. I can get a pound of Parmesan cheese in the US for less than 500grams here. I can get special cheeses for far less than here. The difference, even with the poor exchange rate, is ridiculous.
That’s because the average Canadian is so brainwashed by Canuck MSM, government schools and propaganda from every level of government and has no real desire to learn or know anything beyond the state-approved message they can’t run critically and come up with any opposing ideas.

Carney will never end supply management for dairy. The quota cartel in Quebec are virtually all millionaires (a milk quota sells for well over $1M). They are powerful, connected, and couldn’t care less what impact their deal with Ottawa has on trade for the rest of Canada. If he tried to end the arrangement, they would almost instantly mobilize their connections to collapse his government. It will be interesting to see what happens when the immovable object that is Quebec comes into collision with the unstoppable force that is Trump. Carney will put everything else Canada has on the table to try to get a deal without touching dairy tarriffs, but it may not be enough.
Let the frenchie dairy cartel become the new federal government in the country of quebec when they separate. Then they’d have money and power beyond their rapacious dreams!

The major problem is how do you maintain a dairy, agricultural, manufacturing etc. sectors in the face of heavily subsidized US sectors without subsidies. Marketing Boards are probably the least attractive method of doing that.
