While McGuinty’s recent public commitment to grant the Canadian Armed Forces a “20 per cent pay increase” won praise within the defence community, it has also led to confusion — and some experts are saying they want to read the fine print.
Military pay scales are complicated and are based on rank, profession, deployment and other conditions. There are many ways to roll out a boost in compensation.
Charlotte Duval-Lantoine, a fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, said she thinks this will not amount to an across-the-board pay hike.
“What is clear to me from this statement is that they are looking at all the options,” she said. “We’re still in that big question about what it looks like because a pay raise versus specialty pay versus an adaptation of the compensation package overall — not in salary — are not the same thing.”[…]
If CAF members don’t see a 20 per cent pay bump after the minister’s announcement, he said, it will be “déjà vu all over again” for military personnel who have been let down in the past by lofty promises followed by implementation that “sucks big time.”

I call my noxious weeds McGuinty’s, after David’s even more stupid older brother who banned herbicides in Ontario.
“They need it because the last 10 years, there hasn’t been a lot of love shown to the Canadian Armed Forces by the government of Canada,” Leslie said.
“government of Canada” – Too funny.
So sayeth former Liberal MP and retired lieutenant-general Andrew Leslie who just can’t bring himself to admit to who’s been at the helm for the last decade.
Not to mention paying out $10M to Omar Khadr while telling a Canadian vet with profound medical disabilities to pound sand because they were asking for more than the gov’t could give.
Don’t forget CAF – Carney gave Ukraine $4.3Billion. Keep that in mind while you’re bent over.
Have you noticed the print adverts that the CAF are running? One, recruiting for the military police, shows a young asian woman with an armband containing what appear to be Chinese characters. What the hell is that about?
There’s snow life. Like it!
And I’m sure the Liberals will count that 20% increase in pay against the 2%, never mind that it won’t do much for readiness, nor will it better equip our troops.
Of course they will. They also count military pensions in that 2%. And other stuff that is only collateral in supporting the CF. Smoke and mirrors.
This twenty per cent increase will likely turn out to be funds for more rainbow flags and crosswalks on the base.
Yes multiplying every column in the pay scale by 1.2 is complicamacated. CF salary is based on the public service, except many years behind it. Treasury board will drag its feet, troops will see something on their pay stub in 3 or 4 years. The pay increase will be retroactive, back paid – minus interest, of course – and taxed. PMQ rent will go up proportionally, as they have in the past. The procurement process is so screwed, there are few other ways to increase defense spending quickly.
Apparently, the CAF is keen on recruiting “indigiqueers” – do we need to update our dictionary?

I wonder, did they consider “Abofags”?
