Being “decimated” isn’t so bad. It’s only 1/10th lost, 90% intact.
One day there just might be the proper application of “decimate” beyond that it sounds bad.
Well, to be fair, the initial proposal was to select 1 in every 10 activists employed at ’60 minutes’, and command the other 9 activists to beat them to death with truncheons fabricated from various microphone booms and whatnot.. this proposal was frowned upon by the DoJ lawyers as.. ‘excessive’..

It comes from an older military term. A conquering army would disarm the conquered army and lay them down and then kill 1 in 10 (decimate). In a rare case, an unfortunate army was decimated twice. It could also be used by senior commanders on his own forces to punish his troops for capital offenses. The term comes from the Greek word meaning 10 (deka).
The term has come to (incorrectly) mean annihilate which has its root in the Latin word nihilo which means nothing. I think that is what Robert probably meant as in “bringing to nothing”.
