As a Canadian who has called America home for over a decade, I’m in a unique position to observe the zeitgeist in both countries. I happen to be FB friends with an SDA regular. A discussion took place on his FB page that I chimed in on. Here’s what I wrote:
For the past several months, I’ve seen public & private comments from Canadians that is nothing short of H-A-T-R-E-D towards Americans. Completely remove Trump from the equation. What I’ve seen is hatred towards American citizens, criticizing them, their way of life, their values, etc.
While this isn’t “racism” per say, because Americans are not a race, if the same sentiments were directed at Chinese or Indians or Africans, it would be pure racism.
Want to know why I’m not surprised to see this explosion of hatred? Because, living across Canada most of my life, I encountered the same on a fairly regular basis. All that has happened now is that the Liberal Party and their vast propaganda machine have given Canadians permission to open express their “2 minutes of hate”.
Since I’ve become the unwelcome party guest here, I might as well ask a question that I’ve posed to countless Canadians, but have yet to receive a credible answer: Why is any Canadian angry at Elon Musk? I seriously would love an answer to this simple question.

I don’t think the hatred of Elon is limited to the association with Trump. I started hearing disparaging comments when he acquired twitter. The sad fact it appears an uncensored platform is unpalatable to a not insignificant amount of Canadians. The anti American sentiment is something I have experienced since my parents returned to Canada.
Now to be fair, some of the escapades the U.S. has engaged in has not endeared them to many people. I find myself questioning many of the things I have supported in the past. Many of these things have taken place by exploiting average American’s generosity and love of country and freedom . I believe in Canada we are at an existential turning point. This belief has been reinforced as I read Carney’s book. Right now people in Canada are being exploited by a well orchestrated program of fear and emotion with a clear enemy. The underlying hate make this easy to exploit. Elon is substantially a victim of this. They will be really surprised when they learn of the real agenda.

I’m in Arizona and there’s no discussion about politics except on a joking jovial level. Anytime real discussion comes up everyone’s very respectful and the discussions are thoughtful. No American has said anything negative about Canadians and the Canadians are very thoughtful except when talking amongst other Canadians then they rant but meanwhile they enjoy all the benefits of an open and welcoming community that accept us with open arms.

Rather interesting that: you feel safe enough to say the vilest things online, on American owned social media sites, about Americans. It isn’t going unnoticed.
Even some of the liberals (granted, it is the more centrist or even less political of them, but that is most of the country — the ones you don’t see talking about it online) in my country are starting to become annoyed at the Canadian/British/European tantrums. Many Americans were not aware of just how anti-American you were; they are becoming aware. Couple that with some of your more egregious stunts towards your own people — like MAIDS, jailing dissenters, muzzling social criticisms — and Americans are beginning to wonder why they ever thought well of you in the first place.
Important to remember that nearly 35% of the country reliably votes Conservative, and that most Americans would feel right at home with them. However, I live in midtown Toronto, and I’m surrounded by smug Canadians who routinely sneer at American values and ideals, while they live under the security blanket the Americans provide.
Of course, these self-same “highly educated” Canadians are completely dumbfounded when I tell them I worked at a large customs broker in Toronto, and a good chunk of our business was reclaiming duties charged by the Canadian government on goods imported from America. “But the free trade agreement!” they’d bluster, and I’d tell them there were whole sectors of the economy that weren’t covered by it. Then of course, there are all of Canada’s myriad non-tariff trade barriers, such as our quotas on eggs and dairy.
The problem is a global one. All nations pay lip service to free trade, while all nations practice some form of mercantilism. On CNBC today, I saw a ‘Trump timeline’, which was clips of him from back in the 90s onward, and in every one, he was saying other nations are not playing fair, there is no free trade, and that if he were in power, there’d be tariffs to change that. He is today doing what he’s said he was going to do for years I find that refreshing in a politician.

I’m also at a point where I don’t really know how to engage with many people in Canada – excluding people on this site, of course. Most people I know are in Ontario, Quebec and the east coast. Most are not conservative like me. Many of them talk about conservatives with contempt.
Quebec and the east coast are filled with people who are delusional about their home and the people that live there, they are obsessed with themselves, thinking that they live in the greatest place on earth. So I point out the way they’ve insulted Republicans, Trump, and the like for over a decade. The usual reaction is to insult Trump even more. They’re like children.

My mother was born into a large family in Wales. The British government exported their large families to places like Alberta to keep Alberta Canadian. A great many comments here all with valid points but I fear the real reason for the hatred of all things American is a case of green-eyed jealousy combined with unthinking respect for authority. Many Canadians have an overwhelming hatred of America and for years kept a leash on it. They had to in order to make the yearly excursion down to the warmer climes of Florida, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, and Hawaii. For whatever excuse they could come up with there was always a good reason for the American vacation… Disneyland, Epcot Centre, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Yellowstone Park, Hollywood, the list is endless. The other reason for the hatred was the American lifestyle which Canadians try as they might to imitate can’t quite bring it off. So now the Laurentian elite have given the go ahead to express their hatred and the lemmings and sheep all jumped at the opportunity, and as usual we will all pay the price.

I recently had a conversation with a sweet old elderly lady, and in the course of the conversation she opined that Trump was too old to be president. I replied that Joe Biden is president and he is 5 years older than Trump. She looked puzzled and said who? It is hopeless I’m afraid.
I had a conversation with some young professionals that somehow got around to wars in the world. One person said that America was always in wars, and that Canada has never been to war. I replied that Canadians fought Germans from North Africa through Italy, France, Holland, and Germany from 1939 to 1945. They were gobsmacked. They did not know that. I also mentioned that we held German Prisoners of war here in Alberta. I told them there is still a marker out in Kanaskis that they could see for themselves. I guess to control the future you must control the past.
Any way, as a Canuck, I personally like President Trump, Elon Musk( whose mother is Canadian), and Americans in general.

Sometimes I think I can explain it, and the next day I’m dumbfounded by new depths to which the argument has fallen. The entirety of my parent’s family uses “America” as a means of pointing out something that isn’t as good. When I argue against it, it’s like telling a rock to not be so hard. Again, it is Mark Twain FTW who is said to have said, “It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.” So I don’t wade too far into the deep end with that one as a clear win would require them to wash away +50 years of their beliefs, and that’s not going to happen.
For the most part, they’re scarcely aware of why they even have those beliefs. If they didn’t use reason to get to their understandings, how would reason get them out?
I dunno.
I think Elon Musk and Big Balls, and the others in that group are doing a great service to the USA, while in Canada, I doubt our governance could be repaired. It may be better to can the federal gov’t entirely, start over with some solid boundaries which can’t be overridden.
Tomorrow is President Donald J. Trump’s day of reckoning for the about to be uber tariffed of the world.
There’s a chance his statement today of saying the income tax should be cancelled may give some insight into how much those tariffs will be. If income tax is cancelled, and the country goes to a tariff based method of raising tax to pay for their governance, what happens if people decide to not buy imported gear?
Will Canadians say the USA is going to fail and it is all Trump or Elon’s fault? I think I know which country is going to fail, and it’s not the USA. Just don’t ask Canadians right after they’ve been grocery shopping, and they’re at their most angry.
As a Canadian living in the USA, I find most Canadians to be knee jerk stupid and terribly uninformed about what is actually going on. Especially what’s going on right under their noses. Trump’s mistake, unless he wanted a Carney coronation, was not realizing that.
Canadians are insecure wimps and have been since the Pearson years. They “emote”….they whine. They have a shaky superiority complex which has been completely unearned.

The ugliness toward Americans,is the very same attitude shown to visiting Western Canadians.
The very same unthinking hostility directed at the Truckers protesting in Ottawa.
The class action lawsuit attempting to steal the funds donated toward the Truckers,by Government Employees of Ottawa,is a perfect example.
Everything West of Ottawa is unclean heathens..just ask an Ottawa Resident.

I hate this country. I love America and it’s values. I identify as an American because their values are more in line with mine than my so-called country.
Thank God I now live in Alberta, and away from the neanderthal Canuckistanians who still live in their bubbles in both Ottawa and Montreal — not to mention Moronto, and Vancouver, and pretty much every major urban center in between.
Still, Alberta isn’t perfect, but thank goodness I live in a town where the sane are still in the majority.
I would have preferred migrating to a warmer red state, but that is much easier said than done, so I’ve done the next best thing possible, and moved to Alberta.
Don’t underestimate the willingness of Canadians to screw things up even worse. We have elected Trudeaus 7 times and keep expecting different results, National insanity on full display.
I do not hate Elon Musk. I admire what he is doing to overhaul the bloated system that has been milking the taxpayers for decades. Canada needs a Yuge dose of DOGA along with a few boosters of common sense.
As far as the 51st State goes, an offering of the 1st and 2nd amendments is more than enough to get my vote. When/where can I sign up.
This whole nonsense of Canada vs. the US is just so dumb. It is one thing I wish Trump wouldn’t have done. It was a silly little troll of Trudeau but Trump wouldn’t let it go and now it’s created this Canada v. US stupidity. Let’s let it go and just be friends again.
I will say the Canadian government is stupid for having tariffs against American products. They’d have a much better quality of life if they dropped them. The cost of living would be more affordable and they’d end up wealthier in the end.
But . . . could Canada even have a dairy industry without excluding American dairy products?
Countries like Canada – stuck on the edge of much larger and richer neighbors – sometimes need to do something to protect themselves from becoming a vassal state. Canadian tariffs on some American products do make sense.
(And I say this as a resident of an American dairy state right on Canada’s border. We could use the extra market up there – but our costs are much lower, and we could drive your entire industry and way of life out of business without those tariffs.)
Canada has become so fractured that I think many Canadians are yearning for a tribe to be part of. There used to be a “Canadian” tribe, but that’s long gone.
And so now, Trump has given those Canadians something around which they can rally and proclaim their tribal identity.
People want to belong. Trump has given them a cause to unite them, and they’re thrilled.

I think this set of comments contains some very astute observations about Canada, but I’m not sure they’re relevant. Canadians hate the US because the television tells them to. The television tells them to because Comrade Stalin told them to. There really is no more to it than that. Everything else is rationale after the fact. The hate comes first and the reasons are invented as needed.
