    2. Actually a great idea. You can’t pull ‘a Klinger’ or anything to get out of conscription. Not even if you’re wheelchair bound, have one eye, leg or arm. After all we want Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. But in this case it wouldn’t be DEI but much more appropriately DIE.

  3. I expect Carney is going to try to be wonderful on the world stage right out of the gate. Watch him volunteer Canadian “Peacekeeping Soldiers” in Ukraine. Won’t he be wonderful? How many Canadian soldiers speak Ukrainian? That should be a must.. A lot of Canadians claim Ukrainian ancestory; what percentage are in Canda’s military? Maybe Freeland can be a Liason Officer.
    Canada’s military should be at 2% NATO contribution level before doing anything else.

      I do…and I was in the CF 23 years. Because I knew the enemy was Russian. I’m in my late ’60s…can’t go back.

      If I were younger now, at the same age I was when I had joined, I wouldn’t be inspired to join the CF, with the state that Canada is in now.

      Between studying Russian history and Slavic Studies in University in my pre-CF days; and the military int courses I had to take (I was Logistics), the most important take-away from all that can be summarized as ‘NEVER NEVER NEVER trust the Russians’.

  4. I would advocate that if this were indeed a real country, but I feel no kinship with people who welcome invaders, throw our money to foreign countries, denigrate our history, undermine our efforts, tax us like serfs, seize rights when offended, punish the good and reward the wicked.

    Mandatory, for FN, metis, immigrants, and illegals too? Thought not.

  5. Here’s a better idea. Integrate your military in with the US as a specialty service that focuses on the unique security threats associated with Canada (Northwest Passage, Arctic incursion, Air craft intrusion etc.). But, most importantly, don’t treat your military like second-class citizens (such as turning over barracks to illegal immigrants) and actually take the money wasted on nonsense identity political endeavors and invest it into making the military appetizing to young Canadians, with a connection to securing an education and vocation outside of the military when they are discharged. And, providing them with up to date dependable equipment while enlisted.

Exactly who would join up the military in Canada when we’ve become a radical Liberal Party of Canada run country with no core values, no common history, and and let’s not forget Trudeau’s favorite saying “a post-national country” where everybody is a bloody Foreigner with absolutely no ties whatsoever to this country and it’s people.
    Oh and let’s not forget the Liberal Party of Canada governments hellbent machinations at disarming the entire country of every firearm owned by a Canadian so that in the future nobody will ever know which way to hold a rifle and which end is which.

  11. Even 10 years ago this might have worked. I’m not sure there’s enough capacity left in Canada’s military (at least who are in their right mind) who could absorb the number of conscriptees they would get and pass on all the useful lessons and values the author suggests

    no metric, no french, 1st, 2nd, and a whole lot of amendments that protect citizens from their government, strongest military in the world, better pay, and better equipped, a country that stands with their flag, not just when it is politically convenient, a culture that defends itself, and not assimilates to immigrants,

    We could also look at how military personnel are treated. Get injured on the job, mentally or physically, and they offer you MAiD. Proper equipment is scarce and sub-standard, with soldiers paying out of pocket to get things they used to be issued not that long ago. They also claw back any “freebees” you used to get because only politicians are “entitled to their entitlements.”

    Yeah, I can see why the government would need conscription in order to fill their quotas. No one in their right mind would want to go through hell just to be treated like dirt.

    They are generally younger & in better shape.

    2. 2 thirds of Canadian forces officers are CIC. (Cadet Instructor Cadre). The critical mission that has been undertaken the last few years has been destruction of dress codes,ensuring proper language and basically destruction of “spree decor”. You know stuff like elimination of any reference such as “man-made structures”. There is very little of the military left.

  17. Canada is a small nation in nominal possession of a very large country which is much too large for it to occupy or defend and most of it is uninhabitable for most Canadians.

    To enforce our sovereignity over this country requires a military capability we do not have and are unwilling and unable acquire and maintain. It would at the very least include universal conscription into all the arms and services for more than a year of full time service to become trained to a useful level and at least a decade of periodic refresher training and exercise deployments anywhere and liability into middle age to be recalled for active service in case of national emergency.

  22. I’m fine with conscription. I doubt Canada is capable of doing this.
    I’m not ok with Canada underfunding all aspects of the military, nor including military pensions as part of their active military spending, oh having a great percentage of serving members “serving” in Ottawa for decades, making decisions which are absolutely simple.
    If Canada doesn’t have it in it to double military spending, and to provide equipment you’d be capable of risking your life with, and to pay for education and “poor health outcomes” during and after service time, I’d expect those being called up to simply walk across the border.
    They should be permitted to keep their rifles too, as part of a reserve of sorts, as Switzerland has their “heads of the household” show up for some training each year.

    I don’t think Canada has it in it. I think conscription is beyond it, and Canadians as a group are not capable of having the spine to do this right.
    And, having some people say, “I’m not fighting as I don’t believe in it” … or “I’m with the clergy or studying to serve religious orders”, or “I’m French or whatever and we’re not really cut out for fighting”, or my parents are both members of the NDP or Greens or #Librano Party of Canada and we don’t actually serve…
    Those folks can go to “the front” where they’ll be needed even more urgently.
