Since China has been involved in Canada since Trudeau the Elder was in office Lilley’s interview comes as no surprise. Bannon’s encapsulation of the global situation sums up our position entirely. We have been a vassal state since our inception, first to the United Kingdom and then to America. The last ten years of Liberl/Democrat governance was all the proof that Trump needed to convince him and many Americans that to ensure American safety and prosperity, America had to install a buffer zone around North America. Canada has been unable to field a defence since the late Forties instead relying, like all of Europe on American magnamity. Problem is that America can no longer afford to police the world and Trump told us this in his first term of office. Nobody listened, well we better start listening now because the Republic of China as much as we don’t want to admit it is firmly established in Canada, and that is a threat to America. For the up and coming leaders of the Liberal party to now announce and back Canadian patriotism is weak tea in the tea-cup storm that is brewing. We either become part of a United North America or we become cannon fodder and battleground debris. Hard decision, eh!

It’s a good interview and good food for thought. Bannon’s talking about things hardly anyone else has clued into yet.
Why? He hasn’t had any special insight into Trump – or anything else as far as I can tell – since very early in the first Trump administration.
Bannon spent two weeks in Mar a Lago during transition. He is close to Trump, and one of the most important voices in MAGA. He is a serious strategic thinker, and has been involved in Brexit, Orban’s Hungary and Bolsonaro’s Brazil.
You can choose not to listen, but that isn’t smart.
As but one example, around January 11th this year Steve Bannon did an interview saying “I will do anything to keep Elon Musk out of the White House,” and that he would have him “run out of here by Inauguration Day”. It was quite colourful. It was with the Italian Corriere della Sera, and re-reported widely from Forbes to MSN to Brightbart.
Well, we all know how that worked out.
I’ve noticed a pattern of this. So no, I don’t take him as a serious indicator of what Trump is thinking or is going to do.
China is more focused on raw materials from the Arctic. The most recent effort in that arena was China bidding on a gold mine in Nunavut back in 2020. They were, ultimately, turned down due to national security reasons. But, 97% of the shareholders on the mine were OK with the sale before the bid was removed. That’s how they operate. They establish a foothold, and then exploit their presence. You can see the same technique applied around the world with fishing rights. China over-fished their own waters, and are now buying rights in places like Yemen and the Gulf of Mexico (sorry, I’m not on the Gulf of America bus) etc. In the US, given the right to purchase farm land, they promptly started buying land adjacent to US Military installations.
China doesn’t have “beach front” claims on the Arctic. They, actually, call themselves a “Near Arctic Nation”…which is just a made up term to seemingly give credence to their presence there. They’ve entered into a coop of sorts with Russia. They want to get that foothold to eventually lay claim to the vast petroleum resources there.
I’m curious as to how Canada stops the Russians or Chinese from just laying claim to Canada’s designated “beach front” and all the resources in that area. Your biggest Naval gun up there is a 25 mm.
The size of guns on ships that can’t fight in Arctic waters is irrelevant.
To get to the Canadian portion of the Arctic, Russia or China would have to go through the Northwest Passage without asking for permission. Naval defense is the applicable way to discourage such action.
CAPTORS, but that would require the government to find a production line willing to make them, and that’s not happening any time soon.
Maybe the Trudeau government shouldn’t have trained the Chinese in Arctic Warfare?
