  1. As an Albertan, I had never heard of Eric Cline but could immediately determine his political affiliation. There is absolutely no justification for gov’t involvement in any industry other than ensuring there are regulations in place to protect the environment, health, provide for accurate and consistent measurement, etc. But NEVER should government operate a company.

    EVER.

    Canada’s first communist dictator, Pierre Trudeau, did that with Petro-Canada. Immediately the gov’t “company” was able to out-bid any competition. That, and the gov’t “company” dealings allowed for the usual corruption enriching politicians and their friends. There’s a reason that Juthtin has a trust fund today.

    And the taxation is excessive already. In oil and gas, there is already taxation – just like any other industry. But then there are ALSO royalties. This is double-taxation. And that’s aside from freehold mineral taxes. And the expenses aside from gov’t are high enough, although at least they’re legitimate. Property taxes, FH/ORR payments, access fees, land leases, etc.

    And that’s in addition to the billions spent on the actual business of getting product out of the ground.

    I’m sure there are corollaries in the potash industry. But it always angers me when commies or commie-lites gnash their teeth about gov’t “give-aways” to industry, or start new conversations about “fairer” royalty reviews. Such people always see themselves as the cure to problems only they can see.

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed Landman, Season One. And yes, I am a huge Billy Bob fan. He such a talented actor. I know nothing of the technical details other than I understand the basics of a pump Jack, and how drilling works (although I still cannot grasp how drilling can go sideways at depth??

    But the entire Texas female slut, trophy wife, over-sexualized daughter storyline drags the show into a silly soap opera place. Yeah, yeah, we’ve all seen Friday Night Lights … high school Honey’s clothed in whipped cream … so every TX girl is a hot bodied blonde who drinks too many tequilas poolside … Puhleeze! I hope that part of the show gets jusssst slightly more realistic. At least as realistic as putting a cheater on the pipe wrench.

      I’m sure you can find a YouTube video or two on horizontal drilling (or directional drilling)

      I remember being on a beam pumping course in the early 1980s, when our instructor told us of an oil field where he was called out because the pumping unit was producing strange thick dirty fluid.

      It was drilling mud. Sure enough, about half a mile away there was a competitor’s drilling rig. They had drilled a dry hole on their land, but decided to sidetrack into our lease. They actually intercepted our borehole.
