Here’s a suggestion for a replacement headline: Canada Prepares To Drop Hammer On Itself. In response to Donald Trump’s pledge to hike taxes on American consumers, Canada proposes to do exactly the same thing to its consumers. In the end, will Florida orange juice factories even notice?
CTV News is reporting that the Canadian government is planning a series of retaliatory tariffs that would hit American-made orange juice, which is a major export of Florida.
It gets worse, if the following is true. Someone needs to tell Doug Ford about the bi-directional nature of the cross-border power grid.
“Blocking exports of Canadian oil, electricity and critical minerals is another option on the table, according to one senior government source in Washington, DC,” reports CTV. “Last month, Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut off energy exports from his province if Trump followed through on this threat.

I hope Premier Ford realizes that Canadian auto manufacturing could be on thin ice should he continue to puff his chest.
you spelled “puff his belly” wrong, and it is a large belly.
Doug Ford has been surrounded by the folks around Queens Park/Nathan Phillips Square for so long that eventually some of their brain washing has started to take effect.
He still wants to do what he set out to do, but the courtesans of the center of the universe have weaseled their way into his inner circle and are telling him to say things that they think is good advice.
“He still wants to do what he set out to do, but the courtesans of the center of the universe have weaseled their way into his inner circle and are telling him to say things that they think is good advice.”
So, he’s just a big, stupid, pushover putz, is that what you’re saying?
It’s like what happens when they go to Ottawa and get Ottawashed.
Or it’s like a laundry in reverse.
Ben Franklin made the observation that politics is the art of compromise.
The trick is to make sure the compromise isn’t one that sabotages your own constituents.
But eventually if you only hear the advice of the bureaucrats you start thinking like them and end up like a dirty diaper.
As an example I’m not sure what Kathleen Wynne was like before she started her political career but at the end she was very close to Ben Levin.
I won’t disagree with you. But Ford was flip-flopping even before he took office. He’s just another professional windsock who pulled the “Conservative” wool over everyone’s eyes. He’s really no different than turdo.
The US is barely a player in the orange juice market. Brazil produces six times the tonnage. A tariff war would damage a lot of American industry because Canada manufactures almost nothing. It would be a good idea if Canada built a pipeline east and another one west because the US has been underpaying for oil for generations. Then we could watch Gulf Coast refineries go tits up.
Because there is obviously no oil in the landlocked US.
Most Americans I know think they are self sufficient in oil.
Where would they get that idea?
https://www.newsweek.com/us-energy-independence-first-time-40-years-1878729
US oil production = 13.5 million bpd
US consumption = 20.5 million bpd.
Source US EIA.
They have oil – just not much of the kind many Gulf refineries like. They like heavy oil, the kind that comes from Canada and Venezuela.
Energy East is a bust, just get it to the Pacific already.
Energy East is only a “bust” because of Trudeau policies
No it’s a bad idea in and of itself: https://financialpost.com/opinion/terence-corcoran-economic-reality-killed-the-energy-east-pipe-dream-and-thats-good
Why not just build a huge mf pipeline to Thunder Bay and load the oil on small tankers. They could serve refineries on both sides of the Great Lakes, Quebec, New Brunswick and US Eastern Seabord ports. “Seawaymax vessels are 225.55 metres in length, 23.80 metres wide, and have a draft of 8.08 metres and a height above the waterline of 35.5 metres.” Make them hard enough to run all winter.
Lots of ice issues in the locks (15 in total). I think Superior is pretty tough in the winter.
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead.
FAFO.
Doesn’t Enbridge Line 5 pass through Michigan? There alone is opportunity for some serious “environmentally motivated” manipulation of the lifestyle of a good number of Canadians.
And Natural gas for 2/3 of the country.
https://www.tcenergy.com/operations/maps/
I have a large gas pipeline 200 yards from my house. Dog goes there to poo and chase rabbits
that is a natural gas line
Cue the $16 orange juice jokes.
I quit drinking OJ when it went to $16 a glass
I quit drinking orange juice when it started tasting too much like piss. I’m not sure what it really tastes like but it doesn’t taste like orange juice.
no, please don’t. the juice reference is way beyond tiresome, like many tiresome repetitious shite posted every day by tiresome, predictable commentors.
cough!
That’s exactly what I came here to do … to mock your extravagant PM and his pricey OJ … gonna get pricier.
How quickly can AB/Sask. have a referendum to exit from tier 2 Canada and the imbeciles in their federal gov’t?
Has anyone in tier 2 Canada’s federal gov’t considered why incoming President Donald J. Trump is not happy with the northern border?
Is the Premier of Ontario aware that the USA doesn’t actually need any of Canada’s auto manufacturing sector and that they’d be able to tool up in a matter of months?
Given the choice of quality orange juice, or having AB/Sask. remain in Canada, I’ll choose quality orange juice every time. It’s possibly my favorite cold drink, even at $16 /per …
This…+ 1
Upvote for you, if we had them.
I believe at this point it’s tier 3 Canada. We’ve sunk enough that we’re no longer a 2nd world country…
What surprises me is that so many people are furious at the thought of being allied and cooperating with our southern neighbours/(brothers and sisters) but don’t seem to get too riled up about the heavy Chinese CCP entanglement already occurring and only to get worse if we drive the US away. In SK we should go independent with (or without) Alberta, but certainly we’ll need to build a strong border b/t us and Wab Kinew’s promised land.
As an American I am highly amused by the flaccid bloviating puffery of a subordinate Royal Subject vs the global economic and political might of the sovereign American electorate.
Here’s the thing John Q, maybe all of Trumps rhetoric is intended to induce Canadians into stop being subjects and start being sovereign citizens. Maybe the Greenlanders as well?
Actually that’s exactly on target. All of this serves the purpose of softening up Canada’s negotiating position vis a vis Washington. Trump knows there will be a deal on his terms. He won’t deal with Justatwit; he and the rest of the Liberals are the walking dead. This is all directed at the one who will be the next Prime Minister – Pierre Poilievre. Any agitation or media alarm in Canada simply serves Trump’s purposes of weakening any opposition to what he wants.
Greenland is a totally separate issue and entirely about US domestic politics.
There is no reason to believe Trump is rational in any way. He’s an idiot who thinks trade ‘deficits’ are subsidies.
Trump understands that Canada has hidden behind the U.S. military for decades. Trump also understands that Greenland does NOT belong to Denmark, but rather is autonomous and has been since 2009. Trump understand the economic situation infinitely better than you do. Although that’s not saying much.
Art:
“Trump understands that Canada has hidden behind the U.S. military for decades.”
Which means that Canada is subsidized massively by the US, not because we deserve it but by an accident of geography.
“Trump understand the economic situation infinitely better than you do.”
For UM, that’s a severe understatement. His understanding is zero.
Your comment below on relative debt is also extremely accurate. What makes the external debt situation worse is that much of it has to be denominated in US dollars, against which the Canadian dollar is sinking like a rock. All thanks to Justatwit of course.
Here’s an idea! Why don’t you just cooperate with your neighbor and harden your border? Then there would be no posturing on either side?
Hardened border = police state, waste of money. Not interested
Greenland is in fact a semi-autonomous part of Denmark.
“Trump understand the economic situation infinitely better than you do. ”
No he doesn’t as he has repeatedly demonstrated. He has no understanding of trade.
No one is asking for Checkpoint Charlie on the Canadian Border … only Communists need to keep their people from escaping.
@Prairieboys
“Maybe the Greenlanders as well?”
Of course everyone knows that “Greenlanders” are an evil dictatorship that are loooong overdue for some Freedom & Democracy!
Pretty sure in coming weeks that MSNBC & the girls on the View will wokesplaine us why they need to go down hard and fast.
After all it’s common knowledge that Greenland is the leading edge of “Climate Change”, and likely the masterminds behind it, allegedly.
As I pointed out previously, Ford’s threat to stop selling them power is an empty one at best, since Ontario can’t consume all of the power it currently produces, nor can it send power that it produces throughout the whole province without using some of the interconnects with the US.
Ontario also can’t black start it’s own grid if it ever goes down.
Last time it had to reboot the system from a blackout was in 2003. But then Ontario had Nanticoke, Lambton, Lakeshore and Lennox as thermal plants. All long gone now. There’s a fair amount of gas-fired turbines that can fill this startup role. The system can be rebooted, but it will be much more difficult and lengthy this time without the coal plants.
A lot of the older and much more forgiving equipment is also gone, and a lot more unreliables are now attached to the grid, one little mistake and you have to start the process all over again.
I don’t really want to find out.
The situation is somewhat better than you suggest. The gas plants are all new. The nuclear plants are all being refurbished for 80-year lifetimes. Four of the Pickering reactors are being life extended for at least 30 years. Sir Adam Beck 2 has been refurbished and expanded with additional water storage to utiliize fully Ontario’s share of the Niagara River.
OPG is life extending the operation of all its other hydro dams under a $1 billion project.
Hydro One’s reliability rate is going up as transmission outages are declining. I agree entirely that the renewables are useless and can be disregarded.
The gas plants can be turned on and spun up very fast, coal plants take a long time or so I’ve heard.
@UnMe – “coal plants take a long time….”
China can build 1 a week, India isn’t far behind.
To turn on. I was talking about the time taken to go from idle to running.
These things can go from idle to running faster than Mark Carney.
Punitive tarrifs on KY Jelly would hit Canadian politicians and media whores particularly hard.
Beauty!
Yeah Doug, do it! It will only accelerate the American takeover.
Wow, what a dolt.
Thus proving once and for all that Trudeau’s Liberals are perfectly happy to blow up the country if it allows them to pose more forcefully.
Worse than idiots.
Canadians are so stupid and existentially insecure that they would not recognize trolling when they see it
My God, what a ridiculous little people!!!
At least we didn’t re-elect a troll, and have manageable debt to GDP levels.
Oh really? The U.S. public debt to GDP ratio is 101.47% while Canada’s is 116.51%. But more importantly, the U.S. EXTERNAL debt to GDP ratio is 92.96% while Canada’s is 154.89. And Canada’s GDP per capita keeps sinking. And of course, Biden has been boosting the U.S. debt massively for no return. You were saying? Idiot.
You have a funny definition of manageable. Much of our debt is in $USD, because Canada lacks the capital, thanks Turd, and the value of our loonie and shrinking GDP are changing that ratio quickly, not to mention 60 billion deficit followed by 60 billion deficit.
I don’t know where you’re getting these numbers from. Canada government debt as percent GDP is about 70% or less, America’s is literally over 120%. The USG is spending more on interest payments than its military.
Peter is correct. Much of our debt is denominated in US dollars. And because of “the Turd” our dollar is continuing its relative decline. Your comments on military spending are simply absurd.
…but true.
“For the First Time, the U.S. Is Spending More on Debt Interest than Defense”
https://www.cfr.org/blog/first-time-us-spending-more-debt-interest-defense
Also, being denominated in USD is a good thing because it discourages our government from doing devaluation. Knife at our throat.
Canada also spends more on interest on its debt than on its defence. But is unable to defend itself.
UnMe, are your from the Maritimes perchance? Because you sound – and argue – like a Maritimer.
That isn’t a compliment BTW
We are a Pathetic Unserious Nation.
Big Fat Comorbidity DugFord should look at his shithole province that has turned into India with a hint of Gaza.
The US needs nothing from us of any consequence. What do we have to offer it but 3rd world KORANDERTHALS and Snake Charmers ?
FILTHY LIBERALS
Bring on the Rebellion
It’s likely not possible to be any more stupid than you. Canada-US trade totals more than $930 billion annually. It needs lots of things from us, and we need lots of things from them.
Now, cgh, you’re setting a challenge here that I can scarcely resist. Why, I bet I could be stupider than FL, if I just put my mind to it!
Chihuahuas come to mind for some reason.
We’ve got at least 75,000 new “arrivals” in the last couple years down here in HFX, the only decent fireworks show is diwali.
The government of B.C. sheepishly admitted a few weeks back that in this hydro-electric power house, we import 20% of our electricity from the USA.
B.C. spent $1.4 billion last year in imported electricity, from the USA.
The Yanks have got us by the balls, both economically and militarily.
And don’t anyone get any foolish ideas about citizen resistance if there was an invasion. We aren’t the Vietnamese of the 1950’s and ’60’s.
We’re fatcats who like our beer and hockey.
I could believe a parade would be held.
Potato will give it good and hard to Canadians as payback for finally finding some sense and rejecting his millennial junta.
P.S. Thanks Maxipads. You own this too.
Ford’s Ontario launched this multi million dollar ad campaign on Dec. 1st. 2024
https://x.com/fordnation/status/1863557566661325174/mediaViewer?currentTweet=1863557566661325174¤tTweetUser=fordnation
On the 11th, Ford threatened to cut off all power to the US. I still see the advertisement daily and laugh. It serves as a reminder of how disingenuine Canada (east) is regarding fair trade.
The Canadian economy is forked. Alberta and Saskatchewan should secede and join the U.S. while Ottowa is wrangling over whether you can secede. Others will follow as part of the green with envy deal.
Secede? Yes. Join the US? No.
My guess is that Trump will not implement these tariffs no matter what Canada does.
I have little doubt that his phone is ringing off the hook right now with American CEOs explaining to Trump had badly both their company and the American economy on the whole will be hurt by the tariffs.
Has Pee-Pee talked to Trump yet?
I hardly thing your verbiage has the intended insult you think it does. It says more about you than any target you may have chosen.
No insult intended. Don’t know why you took offence.
I gather she objects to calling PP “Pee-Pee”, since it kind of sounds like “dick”. Understandable. Still, I wonder how she referred to Richard Nixon?
Kenji has it right. What is the big deal with cooperating with the US and increasing border security? It’s a win win for both of us and will cost a lot less than these ridiculous trade wars. The idea that allowing terrorists and criminals into Canada is a good thing is a WEF constrict anyway.
To think that Canada could possibly win a trade war with the US is ludicrous.
If I recall, Trump’s premise on threatening anything was entirely about wanting Canada to enhance its border security and do something about fentanyl.
An act of good faith (doing it not promising over ten years) would likely satisfy him and even get him to stop trolling PM Leisure Suit Larry.
What they are doing is an admission they won’t do anything and ensuring the worst possible outcome.
Is your country being well run? An easy question with an easy answer. If we behaved the same way now but we were instead neighbors with Russia, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, China, or Angola, how long would our country have lasted?
Thank the fifty stars we happen to be living next to the U.S.
This is “Good Government” Can Ahh Duh style.
None of our Brave Sir Robin’s have bothered to address the concerns of the incoming President of The USA.
Instead ?
Endless empty posturing.
Followed by inaction.
And the embrace of self mutilation, rather than talk to our American Cousins.
Canada resembles the drunk with an air rifle, threatening to shoot itself in the head, unless you buy it another beer.
So we shall enjoy increased tariffs, until we elect a new government ,one capable of holding an adult conversation.
And Canadians will blame “Orange Man Bad” and praise our Liberal NDP scum who blatantly hold their party interests above the Nation.
Canada is so fundamentally broken, that none of our so-called intellectuals even seem to see the corruption.
That old question must be asked of all our progressive comrades:
What would they have done differently,if the destruction of Canada had been their true intent?
And how could you tell the difference?
We cannot hold together a nation, when 60% of the voters, vote to destroy their productive neighbours and live large on those victims former wealth.
Our enemy within, who will sell us out for any buck.
Apparently oblivious to the lack of new wealth being created.
And you cannot support a nation that is lawless and in a State of Thuggery.
Interest payments now exceed Welfare handouts.
This is a Progressive Success Story.
After watching these Fools and Bandits posture and grovel so shamelessly, post Trump’s re election, I believe the West must separate from such idiots, for the sake our most basic survival needs.
Adopting the USA’s Constitution and forming some kind of Economic Union would seem no brainers..
And “No Brainers”? That is what Can Ahh Duh excels in.
Lately there have been frequent adds on Fox News from the Ontario Govt. telling Americans what a wonderful neighbor and trading partner Ontario is. A short time ago Dougie was threatening to cut off energy and other exports to the USA. Why the sudden change of heart?
