David Clinton- What Does the Federal Government Really Look Like?

…That means about one out of every 59 employed Canadians now works for the federal government. Which means that – worker-for-worker – Canada’s public service is significantly less productive than it was ten years ago. And the growth in absolute numbers from 257,034 workers in 2015 to 357,247 in 2023 can be accurately characterized as bloat. Unforgivable bloat.

    1. Then there’s the consultants and various small and big businesses who are effectively “clients” of various levels of governments.

      1. Yup.
Under Harper, the feds were funding an “Attracting Women to the Trucking Industry” program.

      2. GYM, you idiot – but I repeat myself – if you bothered to look at the first graph, the number of ‘servants’ dropped each year Harper had his majority.

    2. When the country finally bankrupts us and there is no more money to tax we become very primitive.
You won’t want to be there.

  1. It’s much worse than that once you take into account all of the people who work in the nonproductive nonprofit sector.

  2. I often wondered the math behind how many private sector jobs must be created for every new government hire in order to cover salaries, benifits and pensions (and unproductivity of course). I recall someone once saying that the number is 7 which seems like a lot, but you never know. Government employees don’t pay taxes either. It’s just a shell game.

  3. “bloat”? I would say the federal civil servant explosion is more like malignant metastatic cancer.

  4. And just wait till the government pension time bomb detonates! Boom!! goes the dynamite bloat!! Your taxes won’t be paying for actual services … but paying for retired (at age 50) government leaches to do nothing.

    1. And they have the audacity to be screaming bloody murder that they can’t “work” from home full time any more. Order them back to the office and the viewership of Dr. Phil, Judge Judy and The View is cut in half! Wanna know how productive your friend with the government job is? Check their Facebook status at any time during their regular office hours and you’ll find they’re probably online.

  5. Hey immigrants have to work somewhere. How else are the immigrants who don’t work going to get their welfare cheques.

  6. PM Chretien said he envisioned everyone in Canada working in an office, nothing else. We would import food when we finally built over all arable land.
