Photoblogging

Yesterday, after visiting Lake Placid, New York, I drove through Westport, a small town on the western shore of Lake Champlain. There, I spotted this beautiful home.

  1. Let me guess… Owned by the Pella family? 😉
Beautiful area, my old summer stomping grounds while at college in Rochester NY.

  2. Except for the nice red flag it’s actually a bit of an eyesore, architecturally speaking.

Far too busy and someone definitely fell overly in love with dormers and gables.

    1. I actually sort of watched this house go up. I have a friend who lives not to far from it so I drive by it sometimes. What I heard was that it was built within the bounds of the Adirondack Park, and therefore had to be built in the same architectural style as the buildings within the park, and at the time the park was founded, this was they style, Italianate maybe? There are many authentic houses in that area in this general style, so it only stands out by the fact that it is new and not close to the village, in this case, Westport.

There is a little town nearby on the lake, Essex, NY, which has a few gorgeous historic homes that resemble this one, except they have beautiful stonework you can’t buy these days for love, nor money.

The fall colors in the Adirondacks are astounding.

      1. Not to mention that the view of Lake Champlain, out those windows, nestled between the forested Adirondack and Green Mountains is, and I hate to use this word, since it is used so much, but in this case it applies, the view is stunning.

      2. Background appreciated. I couldn’t believe this was period. (I love dormers and gables too, by the way. Moderation though, for jeez.)

*Lots of them in this house (but I’m mixing up my John Irving novels)
