9. I was involved in the cleanup of the floods in High River as a volunteer. The best thing the government could do was let in the volunteers, issue some tools to the ones who needed them (most people brought their own) and get out of the way. Between the Mormons, the Hutterites and the volunteers pouring in from Calgary, we got the place cleaned out pronto. Obviously, the government had to get involved in the reconstruction, but for the initial response the vast majority of people were able to do what had to be done as far as their resources permitted.

14. Near the end of the series Band of Brothers, there’s a scene where a string quartet is playing music amongst the rubble of their bombed city as folks around them literally pick up the pieces. At the conclusion of their musical interlude, they pack up their instruments, pick up bricks, stack them in neat piles and take part in the clean-up effort. Essentially, they gave their co-workers a little bit of beauty and perhaps a morale boost amidst the destruction and ruin.
