The whole purpose of thoroughbred racing according to the horse owners is to improve the breed.
1) Secretariat set all Triple Crown records 53 years ago. No human race distance time has lasted nearly that long in running, swimming or any other performance sport.
2) So why is the breed not improving. Well, thoroughbreds can trace their lineage back to (3) Arabian horses that were cross bred in England hundreds of years ago. Only thoroughbreds can breed other thoroughbreds in thoroughbred racing.
3) So, the answer is obvious – cross breeding to make the horse faster. Not Allowed.
4) See the circular logic at play. Humans cross breed and so should horses. Open the Triple Crown to any horse that has proven it can run fast: Maybe a Quarter Horse/Arabian/Thoroughbred mix. Why not?
5) Thoroughbreds can race each other if they want but open major horse racing to any horse that can run fast. Times will come down.
Cross breeding would likely slow them down. May improve durability, but not speed.
Didn’t crossbreeding dogs result in a lot of desirable qualities and characteristics.
Surely cross breeding makes them ill-tempered? What’s wrong with a little good-natured breeding?
