1. Why doesn’t Saudi Arabia have pipelines going to their west coast, avoiding the straights of Hormuz completely?

   That would take away at least some of what Iran can threaten.

   1. My guess? The indigenous Bedouin tribespeople refuse to allow a pipeline to cross their sacred lands. What? The Muslims don’t play that game? It’s only the suicidal West who does that?

      1. It’s more likely the cost of building out the needed infrastructure on the Red Sea coast. It would be a huge project, and would probably require that much of the money currently going to the very large and extended Royal Family would have to be suspended for the duration of the project; and that could lead to some pushback by a lot of powerful people.

         Also, it would put shipments at the mercy of both Yemin and Egypt (south and north ends of the Red Sea, respectively), so the security gain wouldn’t be as great as one might think.

         1. Funny thing. The FREE MARKET usually directs the viability of such projects. If shipping is cheaper and easier … well … how stupid do you have to be to undo that?

      You notice China doesn’t get their Arabian oil through the Straits?

      Anybody think the Iranians would really survive a war with Europe if the game wasn’t fixed?

3. An increase in oil prices would be bad for Canadian consumers but good for Canadian oil producers and provinces. While western Canadians would have to pay high gas prices, eastern and central Canada would have high prices plus supply problems since they import their oil mainly from the US and the middle east. Not only would there be no oil available from the middle east but during a severe oil supply issue in the middle east, the US would likely curtail exports going to eastern and central Canadian refineries.

   A few years back, Irving (?) did a test run of shipping petroleum from BC down Pacific coast to the Panama canal and up the Atlantic coast. It’s less efficient and more expensive than the Energy East pipeline but I guess that would be an option. Not sure if their refineries can process heavy Canadian crude.

      Taxes on hydrocarbons are over a third of the price now and going to 50%?

      And they don’t have to do anything but sit back and take the money.

      1. Yep, Canadian governments are far greedier than the private sector they blame for high prices. The energy industry actually makes products that consumers want and need while politicians function more like parasites on the energy sector. Of course, voters in cities east of Saskatchewan would ask government to “do something” to oil producers to lower prices rather than demand governments lower their energy taxes. Wasn’t that “do something” mentality partly the justification for PM Trudeau Sr.’s National Energy Program? Would not be surprised to see PM Trudeau Jr. try something similar under similar oil supply/price shock conditions.

   Does anyone doubt the Iran would look much like Syria, Iraq or Libya by now if it weren’t for it’s “Trump card” zMore agitprop aimed at building hatred and paranoia towards Iran. Preparation for a self inflicted “oil shock” that will make some rich folk very much richer.

7. OPEC is organized crime. Canada because of it’s harsher climate for one, should be independent of fixed prices and production and legislate a price of say 1$ per litre…govs cuts included.
   Watch industry soar…but naaa! That’s too easy and not corrupt enough.

8. Saudi has an East West pipeline, which is actually two pipelines, going to a terminal on the Red Sea. Capacity is reportedly 5 million bpd.

9. The US doesn’t need Iranian oil.

   If Iran cut off the Strait of Hormuz, it’s own oil exports would drop dramatically.

   I suspect all Iranian oil and power facilities would be destroyed.

   Justin Trudeau and Kamala Harris would be pleased with the reduction in oil production.
