Some 700,000 of Canada’s 4 million skilled tradespeople are set to retire by 2028, according to recent projections. At least one-third of tradespeople and apprentices in Ontario are 55 or older. And as older workers hang up their tools, they’re not being replaced with younger ones who bring matching skills to the job site.
Worse yet, age discrimination is a reality. The old guys are first to go in any layoff, not just because they are the best paid but because they simply don’t fit in w/ a young, WOKE female HR staff. The old guys “gives them the creeps” and so, one by one, they are ushered out the door. So yeah, not only will such older experts retire / die, but they will be pushed out ’cause some little darling got a case of the icks.

And almost none of those new millions of canadians from other jurisdictions will be able to replace the retiring folks without starting from zero and either challenging each of the first 3 years of a 4 years journeyman program, (passing each of the exams without going to school) and then attending at least one level of school, and passing the final exam.
I worked with some guys from Afghanistan about 20 years ago who said they were just going to work as 1st year apprentice HVAC guys as they didn’t have any real math skills in order to pass any amount of school.
They were good folks, but math was just not taught to them early on in their lives.
So I do expect some of those currently living in “traveling salesman hotels” near the airports to be still living in those hotels for a few more years yet, and whatever skills they told the gov’t they have may have to be “proven” to others as there’s not a lot of call for paper shufflers at the moment.
You could call the gov’t and tell them you need a new water heater, maybe they’ll send someone out…
Or call me, but I don’t know anyone who’ll do this for the Afghan rate. I know the women folk really enjoy a warm bath now and again.
Where are the plumber-gas fitters who’ll help build Trudeau’s millions of new houses? I have no idea.

When we moved to our new home we could not find any tradesmen/women willing to redo 2 of our bathrooms, I landed up doing them myself. Even the under the table unskilled labourers are hard to find and they are asking $30 a hour or more. Our good auto techs have a 1 month waiting list.
It’s the same here in N.CA … where your 2 bathroom remodels will easily cost you $50 – 60,000.00… and if you offer the Home Depot. Parking lot Salvadorans $20.00/hr they’ll laugh and say treinta!
My BMW mechanic … who is the BEST ever! … is always 3-4 weeks out.
L – The plandemic caused many independent tradesmen to retire early, too much hassle to try to keep going
during endless lockdowns. Some of them succumbed to the coerced injections, maimed or died. The real
stats would take that into the calculation. It’s worse than the government will admit. Everything will slowly
grind to a 3rd world level in urban Canada. That is already in progress in the cities.
I spoke to a former city employee, who trained new hires how to operate infrastructure machinery,
e.i. snow clearing et al. Just before he retired, just over a decade ago, realizing the new hires had trouble
understanding his instructions. He decided to ask them how many had, for example, ever used a lawn
mower. None of them raised their hand. This explains much of the growing chaos in all levels of gov’t.
One of the side effects of the plandemic was the closure of many small businesses. Accident? Coincidence? Rather like Stalin and the Kulaks.

The current apprenticeship hours required for Electricians & Plumbers in Quebec is 8,000 hrs / 4 years.
I want to have a well trained Plumber or Electrician, but most of the work being done doesn’t need 4 years of training… You don’t need 4 years of training to change a toilet or replace a wall plug.
Of course the existing trades want to protect their high rates, so have no interest in reducing the apprenticeship requirements…
People saying that university is a waste and young people should go into the trades are ignoring that the trades are closed guilds primarily interested in protecting themselves from competition.
IOW, no different than “professionals”.
The Trades aren’t really a closed Guild, anyone who chooses that path can get into them, Union or Non. I had a discussion with my Brothers in law, both professionals( Accountant & Geophysicist) about belong to a Union, they thought was un-necessary , I pointed out to them that neither of them could work in their profession without being a member of their respective professional associations. Those are truly closed Guilds

Women hate tradesmen? I certainly don’t, and can’t recall any woman I know ever saying anything bad about tradesmen. But I live in the U.S. Why would Canadian women hate tradesmen? I did live in Ontario for a long time but didn’t encounter this then. I left in 1990, but moved away from the border (U.S. side) just five years ago.
Don’t worry; it’s amazing how adept illiterate peaceful goatherders and their extended familly are at new jobs; we need all those doctors, engineers and nurses because we aren’t training them.

Plumbing? Why do we need toilets anymore? Just dump piles of sand around and spread it out.
The National Building Code mentions plumbing and water supply a few times, electrical devices and wiring, the structural this and that, concrete strengths, actually a bunch of other stuff too. (I think you’re being sarcastic here…)
Anyways, none of the plumbing – gas, or electrical gets installed in new houses without oversight and permits being approved by local jurisdictions, and inspected, by provincially qualified journeymen. The federal gov’t is singing all sorts of lies if they’re saying they’re going to bring in qualified people, as it isn’t up to them, education and licensing in this department is solely up to the provinces.
And there’d be nowhere else to poop but the beaches if us plumbers weren’t installing these…

The shortage of well trained apprentices,is caused by a whole bunch of rules,regulations and happenstance.
Most the kids coming in no longer have mechanical skills.
Lack self discipline.
And cannot survive on the beginners wages.
The self employed Journeyman cannot afford the risk an unskilled and undisciplined helper now poses.
You risk imprisonment and a criminal record if your employee does anything boneheaded enough to cause death.
You cannot fire them when they turn out to be incapable of taking instruction.
And for close to the first two years,they cost you more time than you can bill for.
And good luck if you have to yell at them as they attempt to stick their arms into rotating machinery…

It is just not worth the effort, most of the time.
So we have fewer and fewer opportunities for the future tradesmen to enter the trade and fewer and fewer capable of the handskills needed.
Eventually this will change.
When the rulers and regulators are completely successful,there will be no competent tradesmen available,just the members of The Surly Tradesmens Association working only for those they know and trust.
Let the bidding wars begin.

I’m coming to the end of my working life in Natural Gas pipelines. So far 22 years doing this. We (my Fortune 200 company) have shit luck recruiting and retaining anyone. The job is well paid. I have no degree and am at six figures. Then again, I’m good at what I do. What we take care of is a utility that is expected to be available 24/7/365. If you electricity drops out, they fix the problem, throw a big switch and Bob’s your Uncle. If your gas service goes to zero… well look it up for your self. Depending on the scope you could be without from days to months. It’s very rare for us to screw up that bad. Because old white guys ( and some old black guys ) take our jobs seriously. Next five years? I wish us all luck. I’m fond of hot showers and the oven working. Oh yeah, a buttload of electrical power generation runs on natural gas these days.
