Anyone in the geophysics industry was skeptical right from the get to. Why? Because…
1. The initial report said a “mass grave”, and there’s no way GPR surveys can estimate the number of bodies in a mass grave. The resolution isn’t near good enough for that.
2. Even when the story was changed to individual graves, GPR surveys can not determine whether an anomaly is a grave. It could be a hundred other things. To determine if it’s a grave, you have to dig.
3. The GPR images weren’t shown. I know why. To do so would have ilicited skepticism among the public, as they realized how strange and low resolution such images are. Those upside hyperbolas (known as point scatterers) are supposed to be graves? But this lack of transparency did not engender trust.
4. And beyond geophysics, the reports emphasized that the graves were “unmarked”. But this was a time when graves were often marked with wooden crosses, so that seemed unnecessarily sensationalist, and there was no effort to tone down that sensationalism.
Shhhhhh, don’t say it too loud. There’s lots of money to be made by GPR locate companies grifting off this scam. Wait ’til they’re done, then sound the alarm!!
The GPR location company most used by the Indian bands was SNC Lavalin. Are you surprised?
