You Could Just Make Your Own Coffee

It is both quicker and cheaper.

National Post- Is charging extra for non-dairy milk discrimination? Yes, according to these class action lawsuits

The Starbucks lawsuit followed a similar claim filed against Dunkin’ in January. The 10 plaintiffs suing the American coffee and doughnut chain for $5 million have either lactose intolerance or milk allergies. They claim that paying as much as US$2.15 extra for nondairy alternatives is a form of discrimination and violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  1. I’d love to see Starf@cks lose the suit and pay so much in damages it goes bankrupt. Starf@cks– purveyor of fine camel dung infusions they pass off a coffee….

    1. So, don’t buy it.

Strange amount of rage for a personal dislike of coffee, which, I too think is bad coffee, but surely not worth exploding your heart or stroking out.

I think the real villains, minor, tiny, silly villains, are those who know Starbucks coffee is crap but pretend it’s not because they think it’s cool.

Also, tastes differ, and some weirdos actually like the stuff. My wife likes kale.

        1. I’m with Fred on this one. Wanting a company to lose a stupid lawsuit (I suspect they charge more because fake milk is more expensive than real milk) just because you don’t like their product, isn’t exactly a rational position.

          1. You got allergies stay away from the place. I have allergies and I avoid that which causes me problems, I do not expect others to know.

        2. I’m with Fred too.
The sanctimonious a$$hats are the people that demand an alternative to dairy but refuse to pay the cost of it. It’s a shame that we don’t have “loser pays” for these kind of frivolous civil actions.

      1. I’m with Fred’s wife. Jim Kale was my favourite member of the Guess Who. Does this hat make my ass look big?

    1. I drink it black, no cream or sugar, saving them hundreds of pennies, I’m suing for millions cuz I don’t get a discount.

      1. I have to admit it annoys me that you could get as much cream and sugar as you like for the same price but a larger cup of black coffee cost you more.

  2. How about we reintroduce the right of free association instead?

    ….naaah……

  3. The solution which these muppets have not thought through is that milk, cream and the cheaper options will suddenly all cost $2.15 to add into the coffee, because all of the “plant based” options are more expensive that milk or it’s variants.

For example, you can get a gallon of milk for $3.50 in California, or buy 32 oz of oat milk for the same price($17.50 per gallon).

  4. If Starbucks charges the same price for for substitutes whether a customer is lactose-intolerant or not, and charges the lactose-intolerant customers the same price for the real thing as they charge all the other customers, then Starbucks is not discriminating against any customer. It’s the lactose-intolerant customer who “discriminates” when they choose one product over another.

  5. Ah, the perpetually aggrieved. Next up Snickers Bars laced with peanuts. How is it possible not to be able to enjoy the exquisite taste of a Snickers Bar because Mars, Incorporated refuses to adhere to the ADA and puts real peanuts in their outlaw candy bars?

That’s 3% of the populous who are defiantly discriminated against unlawfully. Why, you can’t even pay a little extra to have those peanuts replaced. They callously outright refuse to even consider such a magnanimous decision. Effin’ Bigots, the lot of them.

  6. Non dairy creamers often cost more.
Would they rather Starbucks provide no alternative at all?

    1. If you live in a country where people can win frivolous stupid lawsuits that don’t make any logical sense at all, you do have a dog in it, because next time you might be the victim. We all have a vested interest in the law being fair, impartial and logical.

      1. I couldn’t care less if it’s frivolous or not. In my eyes it’s a lefty vs. lefty fight. You need to understand that corporations like Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Dunkins et al. don’t give a shit about you and it would suit them just fine if the likes of you never showed up there again.
If you remember, Starbucks ex CEO Howard Shultz, a hardass Liberal in his own right, contented himself by sticking it to decent paying customers and currying favour with progressives by allowing homeless and drug addicted idiots access to franchise bathrooms several years ago because he wanted to make nice with the left, of course what it led to was decent paying customers discovering 3 coilers in washroom sinks, needles and other paraphernalia everywhere. Nice huh?
As far as the law being “fair”, “impartial” and “logical” …that ship sailed long ago skippy.
When it comes to lawsuits, let them sort it out. I really don’t care.

And don’t get me started about Tim Hortons and their anti-oil stance.
Like Francisco said…make your own damn coffee.

        1. “I couldn’t care less if it’s frivolous or not.”

Then you just aren’t that bright. I feel sorry for you.

      2. I live in a world where people can win frivolous stupid lawsuits that don’t make logical sense, if somebody’s lazy or incompetent enough to lose one. I expect to go to a better world soon enough, but until then I’m stuck with it. I certainly have an interest in the law being fair, impartial and logical; but we don’t have such laws, only the interest in them.

A lawsuit certainly tests and demonstrates the law, but that’s not its purpose. The purpose of a lawsuit is to do economic damage, to waste money. If it does enough damage to the right people, then it’s in your interest. It hardly matters what they do to the law. If anybody does come after you, you’ll still find all the law you need.

  7. I love black coffee and think that Starbucks makes decent coffee. If I returned to drinking Tim’s or other such poor quality weak coffee, I’d likely think Starbucks is too strong.
McDonalds / A&W make decent coffee too, and it’s generally less $

My greater problem with Starbucks is how they’ve been donating money to the various “transexual causes” which I don’t support at all.
Rights are for all people (individuals) equally, and not for specific groups of any type.

I drink Melitta hazelnut flavored with some dark french roast fresh ground in for some additional strength… It’s the best I’ve ever had, 900 gm size lasts about 4 weeks

    1. If you want the best and freshest coffee going, try roasting your own. It’s a bit of an up-front investment, about $270 for a roaster, but you can roast 2 pots’ worth of beans in 15 minutes and nothing at any coffee house comes close. And if you drink espresso this takes the taste into unknown heights. And there’s a break-even point because green beans are almost half the cost of roasted beans, and can last up to a year.

On occasion I’ll go to Starbutts to have a cup and read as there is zero atmosphere at hortons for that and I’m amazed that people are allowed to stay for hours on one purchased drink. I’ll buy another if I’m closing in on an hour just so I don’t feel like a lefty freeloader. But how can you sustain a business model like that?

        1. In Ontario, THE store for coffee acolytes and devotees is I Drink Coffee in Milton, hands-down. Green beans are about $11/lb unless you want Kona or Blue Mountain, then you’re way more than that. If you want to move up to prosumer level espresso they have the widest selection and up to the highest end of equipment in the country.

I’d not buy a roaster there, though. I got my FreshRoast SR540 from Pre-Umber in Alberta. Really nice guy owns the business and he has them on sale right now for lowest price going.

This is similar to hot air popcorn maker and does great job. 2 recommendations: use a cheap scale to measure your coffee and develop your roasting profile on consistent weight. That way you get same results whether you roast heavy beans (Sumatra) or light beans (India Monsoon Malabar). And most importantly – put your roaster under your stove fan on HIGH or you may be shutting off your smoke detectors. Roasting lighter vs (ugh) dark and shiny helps here, too and your coffee won’t taste burnt and you retain more caffeine.

Have fun! It’s a great hobby and journey, and if you love java you’ll never go back to store-bought pre-roasted beans.

          1. Thank-you Sultan! I know the I Drink Coffee store just off Steeles. Great roasted beans. Looks like I have a new hobby. Don’t post anything about smoking meat. My wife will hurt us both.

  8. Star Sucks in Kanada and horse piss have a lot in common, undrinkable, star bucks in China serves great tasting coffee.
I should sue the schiff out of every restaurant I go to bc I can’t use salt, and they never have the salt alternative.

  9. I think this is just great.
The idiocy is impossible to fathom.
These pretentious nitwits know so little about business, that being charged for their oddball demands is “discrimatory”?
So all the highball liquors should be sold at beer prices too..
    Alright.
Funnily enough, when they win,at a California Court, they will be aghast by the Coffee Sellers response….”Sorry ,we sell Coffee with cream and/or sugar”
    Latte Oat Milk?
    None of that here.
    Sucks to be you..

  10. My home made coffee is made with an ample quantity of freshly-ground expresso beans, usually in a french press.

When the bag is opened, the beans must smell amazing and be very oily. Add about a tsp. of normal milk and a tsp. of sugar or fake sugar. I never measure – all touch and eyeball.

I do not believe that very many people of British/European heritage are lactose intolerant, as we have had centuries to wean out babies who did not thrive from our origins in dairy-eating countries.
Allergists are paid big $$ to find allergies, and we have “free” medicine or US insurance. Being lactose-intolerant gets you lots of attention for being cool. So pay for it, if you want wierd oak milk or whatever. Discrimination, my a$$.

I have been to Starbucks maybe 20 times, in total, and it was good, but way over-priced. Timmie’s is now unpalatable, having been bought out by an American company a few years ago. McDonald’s drive-through is still fairly good, but you have to remember to ask for milk and sugar. For travel, coffee in Scotland was the best for breakfast-sized, followed by Tuscany, Italy for real expresso by the tiny cup.

Some mom-and-pop coffee shops are usually quite good, in most North American cities. Expensive though, but the ambience is nice on a sunny day. Vancouver is probably the top place in Canada to find good coffee shops. When I moved here, friends asked me what coffee I liked. I think I said Nabob. That was 27 years ago …..

    1. Lactose intolerance is self promoting.

First the follow the fashion they are lactose intolerant and stop consuming dairy, perhaps their stomach is a bit upset from too much booze one day.

after a few years the bacteria that consume lactose all die off from lack of food.

Now they are genuinely lactose intolerant

  11. I must admit charging $2.15 extra on a $6 coffee for oat milk seems a bit outrageous. But Starbucks should be allowed to charge more if their costs are higher, otherwise the dairy cream crowd is subsidizing the allergy crowd. But isn’t it always the allergy crowd?

  12. I have boycotted tim hortons since their jab the kids thing a few years ago. My wife likes starbucks, but since they are woke we have made a real effort to find independent shops and smaller chains to patronize.

    1. TH’s are everywhere. My big problem with them is on the food side. Food menu is usually unavailable; I angle for anywhere but TH due to the recurring unavailability. When it is available, hit and miss at best. Coffee is okay but just as happy at McD.
