  1. Cover versions are hit and miss. Some are better than the original; others, meh. I still don’t “get” the Rick Rubin/Cash connection. Cash’s legacy is entrenched. I do like both versions of “Hurt” and Cash’s video is very powerful.

As much as I love Johnny Cash, I can never forgive him for covering U2’s “One.” There has to be a circle in hell for that one.

  2. A good Good Friday selection.
Each of us, even in a full lifetime, is just a collection of hurt and dirt.
God gave his son to save us and give us worth in new birth.

    1. curious isnt it how scripture many times and ways spot on.
‘dust to dust’. we are made of DIRT. nothing constituting our bodies didnt come from DIRT but those writing the words knew nothing of the periodic table, cellular structure.
other references, dont have one top of my head, maybe this one: ‘in the beginning’, well beginning of what?

      time.

because there was a ‘time’ when there was NO SUCH THING AS TIME.
and no place for anything to change and nothing there to change.

wrap your head around that one SDA.
      tick tick tick . . . . . . uh uh.

  3. I agree with Trent Reznor at the end of the above video where he says “Hurt” isn’t really his anymore.

    It’s Johnny Cash’s

When I was 8-11 years old I spent many of those weekend summers in 1968-1971 driving around the south of Sask. with the neighbors who played fastball (Golden Eagles ?) and they won the southern Sask. fastball tournaments often enough, always with Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash on the AM radio, 5 boys screaming in the back seat of the car at each other and celebrating a win as good as a loss…. great times.
    RIP Melvin….

I had longer hair then those kids were allowed, and was relentlessly referred to by all of them as “Susy” as I had a sister named Susan, as well as “A Boy Named Sue” being kinda popular at the time.
An inherited gene which nukes their kidney’s took 3 of the 5 brothers and their dad (3 transplants) and the one who was best man at my wedding, we were all like brothers.

    1. I had “long hair” and got called many names but “Jesus Christ” seemed to stick. Or did they mean something else…?

  4. I met Johnny Cash twice, 10 years apart. First in Saskatoon in a unique, unexpected, encounter after his concert(about 1986?); 2nd time in Toronto airport, 1995) The story of both encounters is too long for here, but the 2nd time, he approached me and called me by my name and reminded me of the 1st encounter. When he died, I was doing a teaching internship. All the kids were talking about John Ritter, who died the day before. I told the kids about Johnny Cash.

    1. I still think he had a few more songs left in him and more frustrated that he couldn’t quite get that certain level of perfection that brings out the quality of it’s lyrics at his age. Time certainly passes by quickly and having a few more past your prime years is frustration. The smoking too would have been taking its toll on his vocal chords as well.

  5. Back in the day I was trying to build my own speakers and an electronics friend invited me over to test the cross-over he had just finished. “Bring a cassette” he said, as that was hooked up to the system.

I yelled to my son “can I borrow a cassette”. He gave me one of nine-inch-nails. I had never heard of them.

When I arrived to test the speakers, Doug plugged the cassette in and pressed play. As the “music” played he had the most puzzled look on his face. He looked at me and said “it must be the cassette player”.
