I’ll repeat my favourite stat.
GDP per capita 2023 in US dollars. USA – $80,412; Canada $53,247
Canada has become a certified shithole. Trudeau has crashed the economy.
And GDP per person in Canada is below that of the poorest US state (Mississipi?) if the statistics are correct.
This slippage has developed slowly over a long enough period of time such that most Canadians have not really noticed. Which is why I repeatedly point out that “rip the bandaid off” governance will achieve the return of the socialists after a single CPC term and a conservative wilderness of 3-4 terms.
for 2022 we still beat Mississippi ($47,189 versus $53247) but only barely.

We are currently in Mexico on vacation for the first time in 5 years. A lot of restaurant items are now priced as much or more than what we pay at home. The last time we were here the Peso was 16 to the Canadian $. Now it’s 12.
I spent most of February on a road trip in Australia, (New South Wales and Western Australia) escaping the cold and snow of Canada. Taking into account exchange rates, I found most prices in Australia to be very comparable to Canada. Cheapest gas (petrol, as they call it) I bought was Au$1.71/L (Cdn$1.60), most expensive I saw was Au$2.39. And that was at stations in NSW that were less then 5kms apart! They have true competition! Also, the lowest grade I saw was 91 octane, whereas in Canada, the lowest grade most people buy is 87.
Restaurant food was slightly more expensive, but there generally is no tipping, and the portions are generous, so no issues with price. (Best Chinese and Thai food I found – KIngsgrove RSL in Sydney; best fish & chips – Cicerello’s in Fremantle. The RSL at Bondi Beach had really good schnitzel!). The RSLs (Returned Services League) are supposedly equivalent to the Legions in Canada, but they do it right down under, where our Legions are struggling. These are full-on high quality restaurants and clubs, open daily. You have to be a member, or a guest of a member, or you can ‘buy’ a one-day membership.
Most motel / hotel / cabin rentals were of reasonable price, comparable to Canada. Best value to me was renting cabins in caravan parks, usually Au$100-$120/night. One thing Australia really needs to learn about though is ‘Vacancy / No Vacancy ‘ signs. Didn’t see a single one anywhere. Made too many stops to discover nothing available, especially in and near Perth.
Internal flights in Australia are really cheap when compared to Canadian flights of equivalent length. Well worth travelling around in the country. I happened to be passing through Melbourne the day after Taylor Swift’s first concert there. The airport was a nightmare. Most airlines had laid on dozens of extra flights to accommodate the demand. It seemed like every other person in Melbourne Airport was wearing Taylor Swift attire.
The biggest downside to my trip was flying Air Canada to get there. Enough said about that. But it was the cheapest, and I booked 3 months in advance.

This is due to the fact that in North America, we use a different scale. AKI is the scale used in North America, RON in most other places. 91RON = 87AKI.
