I thought those iphones on display were ‘dummies’ with no internal workings –
They’re real so customers can play with them, see all the features.
But you’d think Apple would have a way to track them and/or zap them into a useless paperweight.

This is, in a way, kind of funny. Once a display unit goes outside of the range of the store WIFI, a kill switch is automatically activated making each of those units worthless. They sell some of the display units eventually, but a special configuration has to be done to assure that the security feature doesn’t activate. Additionally, each of those phones has a rather annoying alarm installed that will activate the moment he tries to boot any of them up.
He’s, also, on facial recognition from the multitude of CCTV units in that store. Additionally, employees are instructed not to get in the way of someone pulling units like this guy. However, had he move over to take some of those phone cases or carrying bags, security would have grabbed him and held him for police. Those, of course, cannot be deactivated like the phones this guy shoved down his pants.
Think he cares about facial recognition? The police are too busy chasing down church goers and MAGA voters to bother with actual crime.

Re: the empty police car parked in front of the Apple Store. This is commonplace throughout the Bay Area. The police don’t have enough officers to actually protect any businesses, so they park surplus cars around town as … deterrents.
My own comfy, insulated, 94% white and Asian suburb uses the same tactic at our local Safeway store. Where liquor is regularly boosted by *ahem* … people who don’t belong in our community.
