Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

As I recall, it was Mathew’s Gospel who had Joseph, Mary’s betrothed, who had an angel appearing to him in a dream explaining that Mary had not been playing around but was pregnant with God’s son. Joseph listened to the angel and acted accordingly. However, the last verse of Matthew I, chapter 1, states (KJV) “And he knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son” – so much for the “ever virgin” story. I do hope Joseph and Mary had a happy life together, including sex.
Pretty hard considering Joseph was a retired Priest, a widower, and in his 80’s, functioning as the legal guardian of a marriage-aged woman, and Mary was a consecrated Temple Virgin, who by age 14, or ‘first flower’, whichever occurred first, had to leave, due to the ‘issue of blood’. By the way, that “until” is misread in modern usage, as implying an end to the state of virgin-hood. It is a tired old trope, and a classic blunder of modern interpreters.
Matthew also ends with Christ stating that He will “be with you all the days UNTIL THE END OF THE AGE”. Oops. We see the people who don’t want Mary a virgin, will cherrypick the one verse, but not the other.
The Age is the current one. Which ends with Armageddon. So is Christ thereby stating He will abandon us in the next age? Clearly not.
This has never been lost throughout Church history, it is just, as per the Church’s warnings over 1500 years ago, the scriptures cannot in and of themselves, give you all the context you need. Mary went to live with the disciples after Joseph’s passing (he did not live to witness the crucifixion of his adopted son, praise God). It was at her insistence that she is not mentioned much in the Gospels.
A good study of the Church Fathers will clear up a LOT of misconceptions in scripture. Sadly, the purpose of the original Church was to guide the faithful in praxis of the faith, so that you weren’t abandoned to have to try to sort out the scriptures’ meaning and content, as if a papacy of one.
But the clearest indication comes from what the Jews claimed regarding Christ in the years following the crucifixion: not one of the Sanhedrin or Pharisees claimed that Mary was not a virgin, and that Jesus was simply Joseph’s natural offspring. Instead they choose to go with “the disciples stole the body”. Oops again.
Mary in fact endured the test of virginity in the Temple, where she had been sent to live when she was just a toddler. The Temple Priesthood had seen this sort of thing before, where adolescent consecrated virgins were knocked up by a stable boy. It would have been the quickest way to debunk Christ in his own lifetime. Yet not a single Priest raises Mary’s virginity? Why not? Because they themselves had already confirmed it at the Temple Court.
“Pretty hard considering Joseph was a retired Priest, a widower, and in his 80’s,”
lve never seen that assertion. what is your source?
l do like the rest of what you spell out.
The source is the Church Fathers of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church – the Orthodox Church. (I mean, who can even tell what theRomans believe anymore?)
Also the very strict and devoted Holy Tradition. Earliest references to this are in Church Liturgical documents, but remember, the early Church did not trust documentation in the way that we are obessed about today. Documents could easily be forged, or fake (e.g. the “Gospel” of Thomas, which has virtually NOTHING in the way of continuity with OT prophecy, says absolutely NOTHING about Christ’s mission, and is born out of early gnostic heresies, and nor were its contents widely believed nor taught, by the First Martyrs, or Apostles).
Christianity was established as a practiced, experienced faith, by Christ himself. It was not built on a book. It is built on the blood and witness of the martyrs, thus themselves emulating Christ, it is built on the traditions taught by the Church Fathers, and on and in humility, prayer, fasting and self-denial.
An example is Paul’s Epistle to the Corinthians: he spent 3 years teaching them the Divine Liturgy, pastoral life, how to pray, fast, run a local parish, etc. Do we SERIOUSLY claim that the instant the Roman executioner’s swors severed his head, the sum total of ALL he taught them was just two letters’ worth?
Where do you find this horse shit? Ain’t in my Bible. Note there is a lot of pseudepigrapha out there published by heretics in the first few centuries AD.
What is “your Bible”, scar, and where did you get it?
Also, are you saying the early Jewish Priesthood was too dumb to figure out Mary wasn’t a virgin?
You DO realise the scandal of a married woman hanging out with a bunch of unmarried men in those times, right?
My Bible? That would be the true word of God, the King James Version. I do not presume to know what was moral 2,000 years ago.
Define “heretic” would you. Not sure what you mean by that?
Heretic? A Christian selling garbage theology not supported by the Bible. The volume of garbage supporting these theories far exceeds the Bible in length.
Just be aware that the Protestant “Bible” was rewritten by Martin Luther all to help him break his Monastic vows, and bang a nun.
“By their fruits shall ye know them”…
Tell me scar, by what authority do you declare the KJV (which is translated from 2nd century Hebrew, a version of the Old Testament that was DELIBERATELY rewritten and reinterpreted by Jewish scholars to undercut the case for Christ’s divinity) is the true word of God.
Prove it. I mean, how did YOU arrive at your certitude of the totality of the Canon of scripture?
Personally, I use the Canons based on the Septuagint (the OT Christ himself frequently quoted from, and that is why you struggle to find His quotes in your KJV OT) and the latest translations of the Koine Greek NT. You are using a translation of a translation of a translation, based on the directed purpose of undermining Christ prophesied in the OT. AND your KJV is incomplete. It is Luther’s false Bible. Not the real thing.
There is nothing new under the sun.
I read this stuff about 40 years ago, purported by other scholars of those days.
Virgin is just young woman, Matthew is wrong, Mark is terse, Luke is a doctor, John is an interpolated catholic gospel. ETC.
Just remember that what is true, beautiful, and good, is what is worth thinking on, at all times, despite the days we endure
happy new year and keep the faith
The Gawds have always been frisky with mortals. It’s their default position.
If Mary wasn’t a virgin, that would make Jesus fully human, which would make him not the Son of God, which would make him not divine, which would make him a sinner, which would make him unable to atone for the sins of the world as the perfect Lamb of God. Heresy is nothing new, it always strikes at the heart of who Jesus is and thus destroys salvation. Simple faith in him as who he revealed himself is enough, too simple for “wise men” but found to be the wisdom of God by those humble enough to receive it.
Yes!
and on that count, one thing l consider is the exceptions nature can come up with.
estimates are 110,000,000,000 humans have been born.
is it very very roughly at all conceivable (pun intended) that JUST ONE of those births was of a virgin, by some process that necessitates God the Creator from personally intervening at the molecular biological level to arrange it?
my answer is yes and that answer is based on my pre-existing belief in His existence and power to make things happen with a mere thought. and where that faith and belief comes from is a different topic.
but at the rock bottom foundation is a belief that miracles, or ‘miracles’ if one prefers, is a process by which the Almighty ‘taps into’ some aspect of nature, the electrons and protons of existence, that HE PUT THERE (and which we have yet to uncover) that allows Him to ‘meddle’ as it were in a methodical structured logical manner. medical spontaneous healing is observed. ie ‘something’ specific and unique to that patient’s condition happened and led to an unexpected cure, inexplicable with current medical knowledge.
this alternate and ‘additional’ explanation suffices for me.
so ya, a virgin birth via a young woman living in the middle east some 2,000 years past. all very plausible and explainable.
happy new year y’all !!!
Then it is no more a miracle than is winning the lottery.
Fortunately, instead of trying to justify ourselves by being a papscy of one, and having to disentangle the theology, hermeneutics, and patristics of the scriptures ourselves, we can instead just follow the guidance already therein, and turn to our Holy Mother Church, the “Pillar and Ground of Truth” and defer to the Church herself for guidance.
There are very, very, very few laity qualified enough, well versed enough or educated enough to do amateur divinity studies out of their living room.
You know who knows those scriptures inside and out, far better than you do, and who also knows all your weaknesses (pride, prelest, and more)? Satan.
Bible-thumpers beware: you are unqualified to decode that book by yourself.

Ah, heresy…great
A little heresy to start the day, what the hey.
All together now, cheerleaders! “Heresy! Heresy! Is our cry! H-E-R-E-S-E-Y! Yaaa HERESY!”
A question that tempts everyone, going all the way back to the Garden of Eden. “Am I going to trust God or trust myself, making myself God?”
Who? Christians! …who was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, ….
Who doesn’t, is not Christian.
How hard that can be?
This book is a fascinating guide to the life of Mary and the formation of the Church. Even if you choose to disbelieve it, it will show you what the Orthodox Church has always taught regarding Mary’s life. It’ll give you insights into thought and practice of about 500 million Christians today, many of whom are living their faith in Muslim countries! True warriors for Christ!

A God who could create the entire universe–galaxies, stars, everything–from nothing by simply uttering a word is not going to have any trouble merely re-arranging a few chromosomes in some virgin’s egg to create a human being.
Now if only He would arrange to eliminate the communists, pedophiles, insane trans, perverts, homos, lying politicians, fake pastors shilling for money in His name, and all who want to kill unborn children. The list is much longer than that and would encompass all of man’s decadence and evil. God made the list, I am not sure why he hasn’t bothered to fix things for the last 2,000 years.
Ask him when you see Him? Or possibly He sees things in the future that we don’t?
If there is no miraculous conception by The Holy Spirit … God become Man … then there is NO Christianity. So when someone parses language … or discovers some “secret” Church history … it’s not motivated by scholarship … it’s motivated by Satanic urges to disprove Christianity. Period.
Funny that there’s no similar scholarship attempting to disprove Islam. No, it’s not funny … it’s basic survival. Cause such scholars get fatwas on their heads … and get stabbed in the eye. Sorry … there are no Albino killers “protecting” Christianity. That’s nonsense that you see in movies.
This is (mostly) an interesting discussion. Now, everyone who watched the video please put up your hands.
I did. I have issues with Ehrman’s scholarship, because he KNOWS a lot of what he says is (and was,) addressed by early Church tradition, Apostolic teaching and deposit, and the Church fathers.
He commits the serious blunder of assuming that Christianity stands or falls on Sola Scriptura. So his ENTIRE schtick (debunking the so-called myths of the Bible) is really just a massive straw man, debunking the Protestant Doctrine of Sola Scriptura.
Funnily enough, Protestantism has drifted so far from Luther and Tyndale, that the modern Protestant, dropped into Luther’s Church 500 years ago or so, would have stormed out, declaring it Roman Catholic!
