Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

The real problem with universities is the systemic one caused by tenure. Tenure is the big prize, near absolute job security until mandatory retirement after which comes the cushy twilight of emeritus status.
Tenure attracts the risk-adverse seeking a socialist environment providing guarantees in life. Add to that siren call the institutional structure which defines the professor as an unchallengable authority to which deference is to be paid and what you get is the perfect situation for creating an unaccountable, entitled class with a bloated sense of their own knowledge and importance with political views hostile to individual freedom and sympathic to top-down authoritarian rule by “top men”.
Where does the idea of tenure come from? From a long-gone era in which Royalty granted lifetime stipends to those whom it favored. Of course, the defenders of tenure claim that tenure allows free-thinking and free-expression unhindered by thoughts of retribution, but it has always been the case that universities have predominately been the haven of hide-bound establishmentarians.
Replace tenure with longterm (5-year) employment contracts to attract bold risk-takers with diverse life experiences.
Just think MIT was the place you wanted to go for a great education.
Not anymore.
Well maybe the students are just getting smarter?
(Ok ok, calm down, I am just being facetious)
And some prominent ones are forced to become irrelevant.

Harvard is now offering a full credit course on Taylor Swift by a tenured woman professor who used to be a man.
I could get an ‘A” in that. It would open up so many job opportunities.
Was Taylor Swift influenced by Depeche Mode?
