    1. How do you know which burner phone you are looking for, if nothing ties you to the purchase? Agree they have a short life.

  2. For half a century after WWII ended, the Swiss army refused to decommission its carrier pigeons, even though they had long outlived their usefulness.

    Certain species of pigeons have an uncanny ability to find their way home to their coops from any distance. That is why pigeons were widely used to carry messages from one military unit to another in World War I and II.

    But only the Swiss army had kept its pigeons long after the war ended — until 1996. They have been on standby for decades in case of invasion— this time from the Soviet Union.

  3. The internet is so fraught with security issues that I believe it is outliving its usefulness, for anything other than the most mundane tasks. Hopefully those mundane tasks can be made sufficiently secure that breaches do not endanger one’s freedom or longevity. Might be time to go long on postage stamps.

    1. They can afford it, they just can’t procure it. The government’s policies and process for procurement make the implementation of its own defence policy nearly impossible. That’s how screwed up we are.

  8. I went to a security expo recently; it used to be more Police stuff than anything else, but like all things, it’s morphed over time.

    The emphasis now is on cloud-based technology, which I loathe. I had an otherwise pleasant chat with one fellow, who looked dismayed when I pointed out that cloud-based ‘security systems’ cannot really be considered secure; and I cited some examples over the past decade where cloud-based systems have been seriously compromised because there was no control over them… I left soon afterwards; there was nothing there for me.

    I’m not surprised that terrorists are much smarter than this… Just peeved, and very concerned.

  11. The most secure encryption possible is a 1-time pad: with pencil, paper and a pair of dice you can encrypt a message that is not crackable, even with quantum computing.

    Keeping the key secure is the big challenge and weakness of the cipher (and not re-using it), but the simplest of methods is unbreakable.
