Not Altogether Bad

Bloomberg;

Stellantis NV and battery maker LG Energy Solution have halted construction on an electric vehicle battery plant in Windsor, Ont., claiming the federal government has not met its commitments to the project.

A spokesperson for automaker Stellantis said the companies are implementing contingency plans because “the Canadian government has not delivered on what was agreed to.”

“Effective immediately, all construction related to the battery module production on the Windsor site has stopped,” Lou Ann Gosselin said in an email.

Good.

  1. We’d be better off if no level of government kicked in for any of this crap!

  2. And this is a surprise why? Government is poor at picking winners but losers are good at picking government, while picking off taxpayers.
This is how you end up with $13 billion subsidy for a $7 billion plant for a wealthy corporation, at hundreds of thousand$/job/year.
If would have been far more economically efficient to just give the money to the communities themselves.
But that wouldn’t forward their virtue signaling on the taxpayer hoof to support their parasitical partisan power pathologies.
Like Reagan said: “if it moves, tax it; if it keeps moving, regulate it; if it stops moving, subsidize it. The urge to save us is only the urge to rule.
Progressives are addicted to power. That’s why they re-invent war at every opportunity as cover for their taxation and inflation regimes.

    1. “Government is poor at picking winners but losers are good at picking government, while picking off taxpayers.”

Shamrock, I’m going to either frame that or put on a needlepoint pillow. Your analysis is also correct. There is also a huge, parasitic bureaucracy COMPLETELY dependent on seeking, choosing, administering, monitoring, etc., all these massive transfers of taxpayer funds and which is a large constituency for Liberals.

    2. would that be the Stellantis, aka Chrysler Canada, that the taxpayers of Canada bailed out in 2008? If you said yes, you win the prize. Bend over and…..

  3. YES, good. Very VERY good.
Nice cryptic tweet there Kate. 100%.
If it’s economically viable a gubmint subsidy would not be needed.
All a company should demand is an assurance that it won’t be fcuked with if their business practices are lawful and that it should not be encumbered by all the typical woke mandates.

  4. these “investments” never seem to pay off unless you use nebulous “government math” which can never be checked…

Lets say the buy in is $5 Billion for 2500 jobs, or $2 million per job created…

you could just as easily hire those some 2500 people to do nothing, at $100k per year for 20 years, and get the same effect…

  5. I remember when a “subisdy” meant “OK, no corporate or property taxes taxes for the first 5 or 10 years.”, as opposed to bags of money. The gov’t still made lots of moula with the income taxes of employees, and the people got jobs.

  6. Stellantis will not likely survive electrification so no point throwing money at this.

    1. If they can manufacture 18650s and other cells in Canada, that would be a good thing.
18650s is what your cordless tools use.
Oh, and BTW, I got rid of the electric part of my hybrid bike, and now it’s pure 2-stroke fun, with no plates, no license and no insurance, without having to haul around all that battery crap. The cops around here are alright.

  7. So how is it that Twitter’s lord and saviour Elon Musk not know this? He’s the one with the big effin’ brain, right? Why aren’t we asking him?
There simply isn’t enough cobalt, lithium and other rare earth minerals in this world to do a one for one swap with ICE vehicles.
    My come to Jesus moment.

Relax…it’s only a half minute of your time.

    1. Wow.
Tell us all, why should Elon care about a pipsqueak little market like Canada?
I’ll tell ya what, its Elon putting pressure on Canada to ban his competition, right?
I know because I know that aluminum actually draws the Alien/Jew/WEF mind control rays, you need a Titanium helmet.
Free samples for your peace of mind, only $9.95!

      1. Tesla is only one small manufacturer competing with the likes of the Big Three in Detroit and others, save for Toyota, who’ve all thrown their lot in with the EV market knowing full well they’ll be competing for the same resources to make their $50,000 battery you stunningly stupid effer.

        1. I’m an ICE fan, and I hate electric cars.
Still, I’m in Ontario, and we have a fair bit of rare earth metals here, mind you, all being exploited by the gooks, we here in Ontario have mastered the art of selling out to foreigners, and you westerners are playing catch-up. I remember how you all whined when a big foreign company pulled out of AB a couple years ago. When push comes to shove, we here in the east will come and take your stuff, and there ain’t a thing you can do about it, basically because you, like us, are a bunch of pussywillows, scared of your own shadows, much more scared to fight. Eastern trannies can and will walk all over AB and SK, and you will beg for more.

    2. Not enough copper and other metals for EVs?

Not a problem. The left wants you to take public transit (if you can afford the fee to go more than 15 minutes from your home).

  8. Ahh yes, the government shake down.. Dig half a hole with a politicians name on it and then renegotiate the deal..

  9. You SK folk get kinda pissed when foreign investment pulls out of SK, same with AB folk.
As an Ontario resident, I can only assume that you want us just as dead as the WEF does…
Well I gots some bad news for you, sunshine, we outman and outgun you.
With all your hatred of easterners, I would be happy to be part of the militia that takes all your stuff.
The lot of you adds up to less than a wart on the east’s butt, and you gots stuff we want, and you use the feds as an excuse not to sell it to us.
You are going down hard, and I’m gonna laugh, like I laugh at your brownouts, and you wish line 5 to be shut down. Heck, Ontario has enough trannies to draft to defeat the minuscule population of AB and SK, to say nothing of QC.
    Deal with it.

    1. FU, before you bother to assume the mantle of spokesperson for Ontario perchance you get some facts. Sure there are several million more of ‘us’ but to presume those are men is a tad silly. Most of Ontarians would be lost on their way to SK. I already spent too much time discussing your post.

      1. Like I said, those aholes have already wished us all dead, making them just another enemy like the WEF and the feds.
Also, we have enough trannies to deal with the west before we even start to use our men; that is exactly how small they are.
But by all means, suck up to folk who want you dead because they are your ideological “friends”, they won’t notice any difference in the color of your cowardly blood.

  10. How you going to get to Alberta and Saskatchewan? EVs?

And what weapons will you bring? Remember Justin et al are coming after your guns. Better practice with bow and arrow.

    1. Whatever. We gots more money than you. We gots more lawyers than you. We gots more men than you. We gots more guns than you. We could recruit only trannies and walk all over you.
      Deal with it.

      1. If they gots brains like you, it’s more likely they would march right into Lake Superior before finding SK.

          1. Ontario guy here. When the caravan leaves to take over the west, we’ll be leaving you behind. We just don’t like mullets.

  11. Its funny watching the pussywillows of the west and the pusswillows of the east have a squatting pissing contest. Bunch of pussies who would rat out their neighbors on a moment’s notice over a battery or a gun.
