Fascinating stuff.
Science- THE CALORIE COUNTER Evolutionary anthropologist Herman Pontzer busts myths about how humans burn calories—and why
Individual Hadza had days of more and less activity, and some burned 10% more or less calories than average. But when adjusted for nonfat body mass, Hadza men and women burned the same amount of energy per day on average as men and women in the United States, as well as those in Europe, Russia, and Japan, he reported in PLOS ONE in 2012. “It’s surprising when you consider the differences in physical activity,” Schoeller says.
One person who wasn’t surprised was epidemiologist Amy Luke at Loyola University Chicago. She’d already gotten a similar result with doubly labeled water studies, showing female farmers in western Africa used the same amount of energy daily when adjusted for fat-free body mass as women in Chicago —about 2400 kilocalories for a 75-kilogram woman. Luke says her work was not well known—until Pontzer’s paper made a splash. The two have collaborated ever since.

So, places with food pyramids, state guidlines, utterly regulated and cartel operated agri sectors, FDA like structures, etc suck.
FDA. Think about it. Food and Drug.
And as society becomes less thoughtful, and more compliant, we become less able to fend for ourselves and more obese. We are killing ourselves when we let anyone else rule our lives, especially an unthinking institution like government, where intelligence goes to die.
I’m having a hard time getting beyond giving an “oral mouth test”
I’ve always been of the opinion that folk going around telling others how to eat should be subjected to the “pummel mouth test.”
Not sure about this study. I can believe primitive hunters and office workers both burn the same energy, but do they consume the same amount of energy? Why is the data adjusted for, or compared with, body mass? And, finally, it’s well known that one doesn’t lose weight in the gym, you lose it in the kitchen.
Awesome! I always knew sitting on my ass would pay health dividends…
Harvard PhD’s doing the necessary work for mankind.
Calories and dietary fats are not the problem in maintaining healthy weight. Excess carbs and sugar are. Five years ago, I lost 40 lbs in 5 months (190 down to 150) doing a few simple things;
1) Cut carbs by two-thirds from 300 grams per day to 100,
2) Eliminated as much refined sugar as possible,
3) Shortened my daily eating window to 6 hours between noon and 6:00 pm,
4) Walked 2 kms every day in the late morning shortly before lunch.
During this time I ate my fill including meat, butter and bacon and lost weight. I now eat pretty much what I want but try to avoid unnecessary carbs and sugar and have maintained at 160 lbs.
Sounds to me like:
Burn more calories than you eat, and lose weight.
Eat more calories than you burn, and gain weight.
Math is hard.
Nahhhhhh … just buy some Ozempic pens from Canada!!
And the weight will fall off … magically

Kate is a woman, and it shows.
Who the eff are you to tell anyone to put down a cookie?
If women ran the world, indeed.
Not that Canadian men are any better, just look at BCF.
At least Kate isn’t an ideologue, she’s just a girl.
You’re trying to get kicked out, aren’t you?
Kate, woman that she is, still has bigger balls than you do.
I’ll tell the truth, as I see it, with no apologies, which is more than I can say for her or you.
HiHo,
I’ll leave Kate to defend herself, I know she is quite capable of doing so, but why do you impugn all of God’s daughters? Women are God’s greatest creation. If only God had made them so us men could understand them they’d be perfect!
Our bodies are incredibly complex, a simple calories in, calories out theory does not work. Blood sugar that is too high will put you into a coma (diabetic comas can be caused by hyper- or hypo-glycemia). When you eat carbs your blood sugar rises. When it gets too high your body can’t dump the sugar out of your blood stream. The only thing it can do is convert the sugar into fat using insulin. If you then skip dinner because you are counting calories your body thinks “uh oh, there’s not enough food, there must be a famine coming” and it hoards energy in the form of fat.
Please don’t watch Dr Lustig’s many videos about the dangers of sugar and processed foods and please eat lots of cookies and store bought cake with whipped cream topping.
HiHo … you’re a real anomaly for me … because I can tell you are intelligent, and knowledgeable … but then you post something so totally unintelligent as to pretend you don’t understand how and why Kate ironically titles her stories. As IF Kate gives a damn if you eat a whole package of cookies. Nothing … nothing within her political and personal philosophy of FREEDOM and LIBERTY would suggest she will care about controlling your cookie intake. However … I find her headline “advice” to be soundly reasoned and logical.
Perhaps you are just trying to get a rise out of folks? You know … trolling?
As for women? I’ve always liked females … even when they’ve baffled me. Their charms far outweigh their idiosyncrasies … and an intelligent woman really turns me on.
Almost all dietary guidelines, and what doctors are taught, has its roots in the “Seven Countries Study” of 1961. The problem with this study is that data from 22 countries was studied but Ancel Keys cherry-picked the data from 7 countries that supported his theory that dietary fat caused heart disease and arterial sclerosis. For 60 years we’ve been told that animal fats are unhealthy and we should replace fat calories with carbohydrates but a 2017 PURE study showed that the 20% who ate the most animal fats had the least heart and circulatory problems while the 20% who ate the most carbs had the most heart ailments.
Read “The Big Fat Surprise” by Nina Teicholz or search youtube and rumble for her speeches. Since reading her book a year ago I have cut carbs as low as I can, I often go several days without eating bread, pasta, rice or ice cream and I lost weight, even during the past 7 weeks that I have been sitting on my butt all day after breaking my arm. I also noticed on my low carb diet that I don’t feel hungry and tired every two hours and I no longer caffeine dependent.
So the “Don’t eat so damn much diet” is proven to be the most effective, yet again. This time it’s coming from a Harvard grad, so maybe people will listen.
Every highly expensive diet food company agrees with you … eg. Weight watchers. But Oprah kinda yo-yo’ed on those meals.
