Native bands have held effective veto power over much of the natural resources development in Ontario for a long time now, starting in the forestry industry, which has been decimated.
While this seems like a humane policy, in reality it is an inexplicable wealth transfer first of all, since in many cases the areas controlled by bands are hundreds of square miles, often a very long distance from their reserves.
This allows bands to extract wealth from development that is physically nowhere near them. The problem for developers is that natives will often extract deals from them, and then once they have a few tens of millions of dollars, they back out. They have no stake in the success of the project, and they aren’t dependent on the developments actually going into production and producing a return once they have what they feel is enough money.
The problem is that their communities aren’t dependent on a mine or a sawmill actually functioning and providing work in order to get their share of the money. They get their “community investment and development” money up-front while the project is being developed. It’s continued operation is irrelevant, since their community members aren’t actually dependent on the resulting jobs for their livelihood.
This pattern has been repeated over and over. It’s frustrating for non-native people in the area, who had been counting on those jobs, and it’s also frustrating for many of the rank-and-file members of native communities, because they often see very little of the community development funds, which all pass through the hands of the chief and council.
For example, when developing the Victor mine in Attawapiskat,(which shut down after only 6 years), deBeers poured over 10 million dollars a year into the little town of 1500 people as “community investment fees”, in addition to providing jobs to anyone who wanted them, and other direct community investment. Chief Spence became very wealthy, but the rest of the town continues to live in poverty. There are a lot of people who want to know where the money went.

Only metal should be recycled at the post consumer level (and electronics, but those can go to a depot) since metal can be easily sorted, and actual provides value.
Both paper and plastic recycling was sold to cities and people because they found out that manufacturers were getting good money for recycling their paper and plastic at source, since it was easy to deal with. When it first started, the recyclers were paying to take material away, but once it became so widespread, the recycling companies started demanding to be paid to accept the waste, since the cost to reprocess was so high.
Anyone notice that the phrase “just transition” is a WEF slogan? You can suggest that the WEF threat is conspiracy theory and that they are harmless, just trying to make the world a better place, but then you look at Turdoo erasing the word “theory” and ruining our country.
