      1. I, like the majority of Canadians, was for the goo at the start. Get vaccinated so you don’t affect others. My first Pfizer put me in heart hospital for 12 days, needing stents, clots anyone. My second jab gave me a BP of 85 over 50 for 12 weeks. It’s back up to normal now. I like the doctor am now very against these MRNA shots. The UK has just allowed pushing of statins for everyone, I suspect because of heart attacks everywhere not just in us oldsters. Now the CDC in the US is raising alarms.

    -We must dose our military support in such a way that we do not slide into a third world war.
    -Military experts – who know what’s going on among the secret services, what it’s like on the ground and what war really means are largely excluded from the discourse.
    -[T]he Inspector General of the German Armed Forces had warned against overestimating the Ukrainians’ regionally limited offensives in the summer months.
    -American Chief of Staff Mark Milley had said that Ukraine’s military victory is not to be expected and that negotiations are the only possible way. Anything else is a senseless waste of human life.
    -Re. the mutation of the Greens from a pacifist to a war party ; that a single party has so much political influence that it can maneuver us into a war is very worrying.
    -both the Russians and the Ukrainians were ready for a peace agreement at the beginning of the war in late March, early April 2022. Then nothing came of it.
    Vad’s Solution : One should simply ask the people in the region, i.e. in Donbass and Crimea, who they want to belong to. One would have to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity, with certain Western guarantees. And the Russians also need such a security guarantee. So no NATO membership for Ukraine. Since the Bucharest summit in 2008, it has been clear that this is the Russian red line.
    If the goal is an independent Ukraine, one must also ask oneself what a European order that includes Russia should look like. Russia will not simply disappear from the map. We must avoid driving the Russians into the arms of the Chinese, thereby shifting the multipolar order to our disadvantage.

But it’s not the whole truth. It’s also a proxy war between the US and Russia, and it’s about very specific geopolitical interests in the Black Sea region.

        The Black Sea region is as important to the Russians and their Black Sea Fleet as the Caribbean or the Panama region is to the United States. As important as the South China Sea and Taiwan to China. As important as Turkey’s protection zone, which they established against the Kurds in violation of international law. Against this background and for strategic reasons, the Russians cannot get out of there either. Quite apart from the fact that in a referendum in Crimea the population would certainly vote for Russia.

          That’s obviously not true; the Russo-Ukrainian war started in 2014 when Russia sent Little Green Men into the Ukrainian Crimea. That he is willing to lie about that and pretend there was no Russian involvement until 2022 pretty much destroys his credibility.

      2. Why would Russia disappear?

        Suppose the figure of 110,000 casualties is all fatalities (it isn’t but let’s assume it is).

        Compare with the number of deaths per year in Russia:
        2021 = 2.4 million
        2020 = 2.1 million
        2019 = 1.8 million
        2018 = 1.8 million
        2017 = 1.8 million

        100,000 deaths is tragic, but hardly noticeable in the overall death totals.

        No Russian infrastructure has been destroyed.

        And I think it’s unlikely that Putin will be overthrown. Too many rich people who reportedly opposed the war seem to have fallen out of windows.

        1. Because when they lose it will crush the existing power structure that will in turn scapegoat Putin (for good reason). Then they will have a bunch of unemployable ex-soldiers of a failed war who will want promised compensation and will be rightly bitter and angry over what’s happened to them. Many will turn to crime and/or supporting their favorite strongman in their grab for power. We already got a taste of this future in the ‘Siloviki Wars’ of 2010 where people from the Interior ministry were having shootouts with people from another ministry.

            b) Unemployable ex soldiers? Wouldn’t most return to the jobs they held before they got mobilized? Or move into the jobs of those who have died?

            c) Russia has plenty of resources (oil, gas, minerals, etc) China, India, Japan will pick up the slack vacated by Europe.

      1. There is more and more talk of negotiating an end to the conflict. It’s a little late. Too much blood has been shed over the breakaway regions now for Russia to hand them back. Plus the Russians can’t trust the West re. any security guarantees. Plus there is a bigger game at play for all the marbles, an end the unipolar world.

        There could have been a peace deal but Zelensky was dissuaded by Johnson. “Russians are weak. They are running out of missiles. They are salvaging washing machines for parts. etc etc. etc. ” Ukrainians have been fed a pile of crap by those who want to keep the war going. Really sad for Ukrainians. They voted for peace. Someone needs to be held accountable for the BS that Ukrainians have been fed.

          I’m wondering how that would work. If you are arguing it wouldn’t work, then apologies for my misunderstanding you.

          Their are a number of ways the war ends. Here are a few.

          One is for Russia to basically destroy most if not all of the buildings in Ukraine, then declare victory, and announce a cessation of military operations, without vacating any land they held.

          Two. Russian attacks on a second front from Belarus. This could happen as a precursor to a Feb offensive from Russian held territory, or after the Russians launch a new offensive from their own territory.

          Three: Thye US runs out of ammunition to supply Ukraine. The US is rapdily depleting its ammunition stocks, and I don’t know if Biden is replacing them. Anybody have any info on this?

          1. I posted what Vad said in the interview. My comment wrt Vad’s proposed negotiated solution, e.g. restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity is “the train has left the station”.
            As for how this ends…per Vad, right now we have a war of attrition that will keep claiming lives like trench warfare in WW1. The danger of escalation by shipping in arms is that this turns into WW3.
            What the peanut gallery in the West thinks is of no consideration to Russia. For Russia the war is existential.

        3. Ukraine is finished as a country. Ursala Van Der Leyden let it slip a couple months back, that Ukraine had over 100,000 dead soldiers. This last Battle of Soledar the Russians killed 25,000 Ukrainians in the one battle. Their total casualties are 3-500,000.
          Biden, Trudeau, Johnson, NATO et all are WAR CRIMINALS.
          I guess the Ukrainian Banderite’s should have agreed to stop shelling the Eastern Russians in the Donbass in 2014.
          Honestly Putin is doing the world a favor getting rid of Nazi’s.
          Ukrainians from Canada should be forced to go back to Ukraine and fight.
