Friend of mine just moved her mother into a nursing home (Ontario).
She said her mother has done the paperwork for MAID, recognising
her encroaching dementia. When I remarked that the mother had
to be checked for mental competence before execution (as it were)
my friend informed me that said competence is no longer a factor
in Ontario.
I guess if you really want your inheritance, you can hurry the
process along.

Our family walked my aunt (their great-aunt) and my mother (their granny) through their final journeys. We were fortunate in that dementia was not part of the package, even though for both of them (to quote a very nice young resident in emerg) “the harddrive’s getting full”. Cannot say it was easy, but it was rewarding for all concerned, even though it did take a considerable toll on my health. If called upon again, I would say “yes” and so – I believe – would the offsprings.
Anybody who thinks that some portion of the population won’t make that calculation is an idiot. We kept my mom at our place as long as we could. The LTC was over $5K per month because of the extras to take care of an advanced dementia patient. Definitely some will say F that
If anyone tries to off me because they can’t afford to keep me alive, I’ll say put me in a carboard box and ship me off into the middle of a forest. My odds of survival will improve rather than depend on a socialist health care system that looks at only one way to care for the elderly and the sick, and that’s to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

That there is a very salient point that I hadn’t considered. We are fast reaching the time that we will need to stand and be counted. Each time I read of this MAiD crap, I think of that suffering woman named Sue Rodriguez, I think, who, about thirty plus years back, petitioned the courts to allow her to die with dignity, yet they refused her. She eventually committed a crime by taking her own life successfully. Now, we are being coerced to do the deal if we have more than a minor ailment. Our “authorities” may not have our best interest at heart eh”

Sue Rodriguez paved the way for where we are today, she could’ve easily taken her own life quietly with dignity without going to the courts and leading us to where we are now, she knew what she was doing

I have a serious problem with the government funding both a suicide prevention hotline and an assisted suicide hotline.
If we are supposed to just accept that medically assisted suicide is perfectly fine, then why does every “news” article about someone committing suicide end in “if you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, call the suicide prevention hotline at…”? Shouldn’t the medias position on this be that the person was simply exercising their constitutional right to kill themselves and celebrate their death?

There is a tremendous financial incentive for hospitals to encourage euthanasia because there is no measure in place to prevent them from harvesting the organs of patients who are euthanized. Patient are a liability, but organs are an asset.
