Challenging times in Mississippi’s largest city:
Jackson Mayor Chowke Antar Lumumba responded to the governor’s claims that untreated water had made it into homes and businesses.
Tuesday, Lumumba met to respond to news that the state was stepping in to address problems at its main water treatment facility.
He said the city welcomes the help with “open arms,” and that Jackson will take every available dollar to help address its water crisis.
“We’ve been going it alone for the better part of two years when it comes to Jackson’s water crisis. I have said on multiple occasions it was not a matter of if our system would fail, but a matter of when our system would fail,” he said. “So now, we are finally excited to welcome the state to the table and the valuable resources they bring.”
In case you were curious, here’s the profile on Mayor Lumumba. One wonders if he has focused too much time & energy on diversity and not enough on providing clean drinking water?
November 2017: He entered the mayor’s office with a plan to make Jackson, Mississippi the “most radical city on the planet”.
March 2021: His “progressive” plans hit a wall aka “reality”.
August 2022: State of Emergency declared due to “multiple water problems”.

It looks a lot like Prime Minister Trudeau’s promise to provide clean drinking water to Canadien Indian reserves. He has been the leader of the country since 2015. They have yet to have clean drinking water. Never trust a politician to fix a problem with infrastructure. It is much easier to blame some one else and then campaign on fixing it in the next election.
To say nothing about all those trees that were to be planted.

I’ve made a version of this comment about 7 billion times in 7 billion different places- modern mayors, for the most part give not a shit for things government is SUPPOSED to be doing; like water and sewage, ploughing the streets in the winter (mercifully for the people of Jackson not a major concern), garbage collection…
It’s all about promoting BIPOC rights, equity, anti-white stuff, and of course, in the case of black mayors, filling up city hall with hacks and relatives, according to the time honored African model.
Melvin Carter the mayor of St. Paul, has a cabinet of (doing this from memory) 16 people, all making 6 figure incomes.When George Latimer was mayor in the 70’s and 80’s he had 3, a guy at the statehouse, a guy at city hall, and a personal assistant.
I could live with the hackerama, except that now St. Paul’s streets (let’s not forget what’s going on across the river in Minneapolis, featuring Jacob Frey, the feckless, carpetbagging boy mayor) are dangerous in ways guys like me, who grew up there in the 50s and 60s can’t even imagine. My friends who live there seem oblivious, kinda like Joe, the guy you work with who puts on a couple pounds a week- you see him every day, so you don’t notice, but the salesman who shows up on his yearly visit from the Smooth Butt Falls office takes a gander at Joe and goes “ Hey! One man to a pair of pants!”
Minneapolis, in the 70’s was run by an ex-cop named Charlie Stenvig- Charlie was kind of a Midwestern Frank Rizzo, a law and order guy, a devout Lutheran, back when such people actually existed, and a great figure of fun for the “Mini Apple’s” smart set. Of course you could walk the streets when Charlie was mayor.. now, though?
Guys like Mayor Daley was corrupt as all hell- idiot nephew on the city payroll? no problem; but by God the garbage better get picked up.

Typically what happens when people leave the city in droves (there’s a name for this) over a ten year span drying up municipal coffers in the process. The first to feel the pinch is almost always infrastructure (See Flint Mich.)
Jackson residents think they’re livin’ large by finally having one of their own at the helm, so now they’re finally calling the shots…y’know, doing grown up stuff.
