Must be a slow news day when the media trots out a story about a phenomenon that Canadians have been well aware of for nearly a century now. Since when has Atlantic Canada’s track record in entrepreneurship ever been something other than “disturbing”? Other than when startups have been showered with tax dollars only to fold the tent a short while later.
It might be a more worthwhile read if the author explained what companies with odd names like these actually do.
“Last year was the best of times for growing startups, as companies like Meta Materials, Introhive and Sonrai boasted large capital raises and strong revenue growth,” Entrevestor principal Peter Moreira said.

What do these companies do?
Siphon money off to Liberal cronies.
This says it all

These goverment officials should all be sleeping with one eye open in the days to come. Just a heads-up.
Not sure what happened, but this comment was on a different thread about the health minister saying that one is no longer considered vaxxed with just 2 shots. What happened?
I’m hearing that posting in the wrong thread can be a side effect of not being fully vaccinated. That’s why the government is changing the definition.
Don’t worry. Simply dress up as a cultural and racial stereotype and you will be fine.
Dressing up solves everything.
Keeping with the milking the taxpayer theme:
The Governor General racks up $100k catering bill for trip to Dubai
This thread also shows some of the Turds catering bills on flights:

the trip to dubai works out to over $3k per person on that plane
You can’t have a successful entrepreneurial society when much of the money comes from the state.
I’d love to get my hands on the latest stylebook(s) that Canadian “Journalists” have to utilize.
How are any of these quotes actually print-worthy?
“Women-led companies only raised eight per cent of the total funding last year.”
You come to seed or angel investors with a piss poor offering with a small likelihood of return, you don’t receive funding. Simple. Gender is irrelevant.
“…..which also pointed out that Black and Indigenous founders are still underrepresented.”
This is absolutely correct. What incentive is there to procure funding for a project when, in reality, victimhood is an industry which rewards low yield efforts?
Apparently women don’t know what a woman is anymore, so why would anyone support their businesses?
The maritimers have gone from hewers of wood and drawers of water to suckers of tit. The money’s better.
After some shallow diving…
Meta Materials: These guys are into mucking around at nano level to create advanced films of ultra thin materials that do… stuff…
Not sure if they actually make anything, or just do research. I feel the later.
Introhive: Code monkeys that seem to be developing market analysis type software.
Sonrai: Also code monkeys doing similar, although there might be more than one Sonrai out there. So I may have the wrong one.
So… based on my casual skimming… dunno. Seem to be at best very niche specialised companies that are basically offering ‘support’ type services to greater industry. They MIGHT know their stuff, but the bigger question is just how useful in pragmatic terms are their products, and how much is smoke and mirrors based on the ability to successfully secure funding.
We’re our own worst enemy. Every liberal idea gets taken to the extreme and the rules and regulations keep getting piled on top. It really is a nice place to live, but forget trying to start a business here.
Clairtone anyone ? Just to remind people not as old as I: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clairtone
Nova Scotia and New Brunswick didn’t want to join Confederation in 1867. Quebec has wanted out. Maybe it was a bad decision all round.
Well, Confederation did not take place because the provinces wanted it. The British were concerned that the United States, as a result of the militarization of the Civil War, had become the dominant power in America, and it would be some time before Britain could contemplate taking them on. All the colonies at risk of conflict with the US needed to be grouped under a single administration, and that administration had be given official responsibility for the defense of its territory. Then, if the Americans attacked, the British would have the option of leaving it to the locals, and would not be committed to a war that they couldn’t win. That’s why Canada was created. All the locals could do was try to make it happen on a workable basis, because it was going to happen.
A good businessman is defined as someone who can write a winning government grant application. Regulation overload kills many business ventures.
For every Atlantic bailout program another office building is built in Ottawa.
I despair.
