I really liked the new Top Gun movie but I didn’t go in assuming it had much resemblance to reality.

The film’s F-18s and other military gear are courtesy of the Pentagon. This is the job of the U.S. Defense Department’s Entertainment Media Office, which allows use of such assets in exchange for control of the script. Each military branch — except for the Marine Corps, which operates out of Camp Pendleton in San Diego County — maintains satellite offices along Wilshire Boulevard to do outreach with the entertainment industry.
But if the Marine Corps had satellite offices in The Castro District … that would be … incluuuuuuuusive? Right?
From what I understand the studio paid $18,000/hr for the shots involving the F-18. From a DOD perspective the ROI is pretty good. The recruitment PR for the first TopGun was priceless.

If I am not mistaken the first movie had F 14 tomcat ( swing wing) jet fighters, not F 18 hornets.
the F 14 tomcat was introduced in 1974
the F 18 is from 1983 ( yes they do improve and upgrade them from time to time )
both are old
why did they not use F 35 or F 22 which were introduced in 2006?
And if they absolutely had to use older jet fighters, why not use the F 15 Eagle which is in many ways the best fighter they ever made? ( not stealth but more agile than almost anything else )
F18s used were 2 seater models. Then needed them for the cameras and actors.
F15 is Airforce not Navy.
Original Top Gun used F-14 which was at that time the standard Navy fighter. Also spoilers …
New Tog Gun used F/A-18 which is the standard Navy fighter now.
F-15 and F-22 are Air Force fighters.
F-35 … I will not spoil why F/A-18 was chosen. But it fits the script. Also, they needed two seaters for filming.
Those are super Hornets, not the old F-18C. The US Navy currently operate those and of course there is the dual seat version for the in cockpit shots.

Quid pro quo has been around since producers have had casting couches.
And its not like they got handgun advice from Alec Baldwin.
1. only thing worth mentioning t.g. 1 the sound track.
2. it was that one l deduced mr cruise had (does he still?) a clause in his contract his character gets to boink the lead female character. think about it. right from the start the house party one, rain man, ( uh …UH .. uh .. UH ..), eyes wide shut (rumour is ms kidman actually let him)

The only TC movie I’ve seen that I actually liked was Top Gun and it was only because of the flying scenes.
I liked him in Collateral and Minority Report too. Also, he was a producer for Narc, a greatly underrated film IMHO.
War of the Worlds on the other hand, is his single worst film.
I quite agree on WOTW. It was complete rubbish, though much of the blame goes to Spielberg, who hasn’t directed much worth watching for nearly 40 years, though I did finally like Jurassic Park.
I liked him in the new Top Gun too. Really fun film. A fun film like they used to make. Heroes are heroes, they do not transition while climbing a brokeback mountain and suffering from systemic racism. They’re just heroes. No woke SJW preaching. Plot perhaps more naïve than the original, but truly fun and enjoyable. I can see why it is a box office hit. We went with the whole family, kids loved it, wife loved it too. Don’t expect deep insight, just enjoy it. It is the first film that I fully recommend since the criminally underrated Greyhound.

I’m surprised our now-woke military went along with all the frivolous burning of fossil fuels, just to make a movie.
The USN got good PR nearly for free. The in-house stuff had everyone in petty coats.
