The further you get from that, either over or under, the lower their lifespan in terms of charge/discharge cycles.
I built an electric bike back in 2017 and have ridden it over 10,000 km. I have never had a battery problem and no one I know has ever had a battery problem. It is true that a lithium battery will burn fiercely once ignited. The problem is usually overcharging. My batteries have only lost a couple of percent of their charge capacity even after 4 – 5 years of service. I store them at 85% of charge and at room temperature. As an aside, I have never had a flat tire or a broken spoke and am on the same set of original tires. I use heavy duty spokes and line my tires with kevlar. Like all things – build carefully and use the best parts.

I’m pretty sure that all battery fires result from either a badly designed or failed BMS causing some of the cells to overcharge, or physical damage to the cells. P=I^2*R, and all that.

E-bikes are pretty good, in fact, they make a lot more sense than electric cars, because of the power and energy/weight ratios. The reason they’re popular is because the state makes it illegal to strap a chainsaw motor and a centrifugal clutch to a bicycle.

When I charge my rc plane batteries they go in a dome (ceramic plate and flower pot). I have had large lipos cook off, quite impressive release of energy. Had one go off after a, shall I say, an unintended landing and started a grass fire. Nitro and gas burn slower and cooler.

The electric cars will produce a lot of new firefighter jobs though. One thing that Biden and Trudeau can take credit for.
I think EVs will kill more people when they die from hypothermia when they get stranded in a snowstorm than will die from spontaneous battery fires, which are always caused either by bad design or physical damage to the batteries.

It is. That’s not what “e-bikes” as sold here look like. I remember researching it a while ago and EV automobiles that aren’t Teslas have a lower incidence of catastrophic fires than ICE automobiles. Teslas have such a high incidence of car fires that it drags the overall average up.
My apartment building has just announced that they’ve installed EV chargers for use by tenants. They’re installed in the underground parking garage. I don’t see this ending well.
Has the owner of the building consulted his insurance agency? Is your rent increasing to pay for higher premiums? Is he just gonna charge tenants with EVs to use them, and include the cost of higher premiums in that surcharge?
Insurance companies would be the ones to know if there is any real danger.
Clearly all road going bicycles should be equipped with those batteries…

Just bought an E-Bike, Kenji, and it is pedal assist so you have to pedal. Just did 16kms up and down the hills here in Burlington Ontario. There are 3 levels of assist and the first level is a challenge on the hills so I work a little harder. Lots of fun so far as being almost 79 my old Trek bike was too hard to pedal for me even at the lowest gear so enjoying biking again. Lots of seniors in my apartment building are getting these bikes with a step through frame to make it easier to get off as I couldn’t get my leg over the old crossbar.
E-bikes are a great technology that is liberating millions. A better tech would be a bicycle with a small gas engine, an extra sprocket and a centrifugal clutch, but our owners have decided that those are verboten, it least in most of Canada.
How about a crotch rocket? 600 cc or more. Basically a bicycle with a small gas engine and a sprocket. But a real clutch.
Now we are getting somewhere, and fast.
Those are verboten too, unless I jump through all sorts of red tape hoops, and pay, pay, pay.
Wouldn’t it be a lot better if everyone stayed home in the kitchen cooking up some crystal meth?
