11. Bruce Bawer’s piece, as usual, is excellent. SPOT ON. Canadians are actually not nice at all.
    There was a time, as recent as my youthful, naive 60s (I’m a grown up 73 soon) when I thought that sending a Bawer’s piece with a brief bio (uber-liberal gay intellectual New Yorker, ex-pat American, moved to Norway, gradually converted to conservatism) might soften up an interlocutor, but alas! that turned out to be a pipedream.

A friend of some 60 years recently failed to answer my admittedly rhetorical question: “but surely you disagree with preventing me from boarding a plane or train, or dining in a restaurant?     The foundation of Canada has always been the unstated premise that a crown appointed bureaucracy with limited rights for the great unwashed is superior to a republic where the government is limited and that the natural rights of that great unwashed rabble are not for the government to determine who does and doesn’t get to have.
